The lnvention relates generally to aholding attachment for .vises or the like particularly adapted for-use with. a fdrill Vor 'jig vise. The ,invention has `among ,its objects the production of a'holding device adapted ltobe attached to one ofthe clampingfaces-,of a vise by .means of which cylindrical vand other curved or irregularly shaped .objects maybe .eicientlyhe'ld in position in the vise.
Another object .o'fthe'invention is'the production of such an attahment'whichmay be readily adjusted to accommodate work of various slzes.
A Vfurtherobject of the invention is the production ofrsuch 'an attachmentwhich is simple in construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture` and very 'efficientin operation.
Affurther object 'of th'e'invention is theproduction of such an `attachr'nent which may be mounted on .existing vises requiring relatively minor Yc'l'ian'gestoaccomplish this result.
The invention.isiparticularly .adapted for use on a drill or jig vise such asthat shown and described in my U.. S,.l=Patent *No.12,'31"5,'318,1issued on March 30, 1943, and I have illustratedrmy invention hereinas. applied to Ysuch Aa vise.

The vise illustrated in the drawings broadly comprises a base, indicated generally by the numeral I, having threaded uprights 2 slidably mounted thereon, the uprights 2 having a clamping plate 3 secured thereto. The plate 3 is provided with apertures therein through which the uprights 2 extend, the latter being locked in position by the nuts 4. A lever 5 is secured to an operating shaft 6 which is operatively connected to the uprights 2 whereby the latter may be moved upwardly or downwardly to clamp an object between the plate 3 and the opposing face 1 of the base portion I the mechanism for accomplishing this result being described in the reference patent.
Secured to the inner face of the plate 3 is a pair of blocks designated generally by the nu.- meral 8, the base 9 of each block having a longitudinally extending tongue I0, of rectangular cross section, extending therefrom, each .tongue being seated in Ya .similarly shaped groove II .in the adjacent face of the plate 3,.the blocks being securely -held in position vby suitable bolts I2 passing through holesin the plate 3 and threaded into "the tapped holes I3 in the respective blocks. As the tongues ID and cooperating grooves I'I have parallel edges, the blocksmay vbe reversely positioned on" the plate.
Each block`-isl.constructed with a pair of inclinefdjface vportions 'I4 and 'f5 respectively which, in the embodiment oi the invention illustrated, are inclined towards one another, each at an angle of `substantially "forty-"five degrees .with the baseB.

Thus when the blocks are positioned as illustrated in Fig. 2with the face portions Iii `inopposed relation, 'a relatively large piece of work such as'a'cylinder, indicated in dotted lines iniFig. 2, maybe clamped between-theportions II4 and the `face 1 of the vise.
When it is desired to clamp a smaller Piece of work, 4such as a smaller cylinder, indicated in dotted-lines in "Fig.2,"the`blocks maybe reversed as indicated in dottedlines, so that the smaller piece of work maybe readilywclamped in the vise between the portions I5 "and the face 1 without changing the adjustment of the plate 3, as the junctureof'the-planes lofthe portions I5 will be spaced a greaterdistanceirom the face of the plate 3---than the juncture v`of the planes of the face portions I4 when the latter are in opposed relation. Thus the reversal of the blocks, in effeet, operates to increase or diminish the work receiving space between the respective inclined portions and the opposite vise face.
The vise illu-strated is provided with an aperture I1 in which is seated a removable flanged sleeve IS adapted to align a drill or other tool for application thereof to the work being held in the vise, the size of the bore I9 of the sleeve I8 depending upon the size of the tool employed. To permit engagement of such a tool with the work held in the vise, the blocks 8 are provided with recesses 2I and 22, the recesses 2I of the respective blocks being aligned with the bore I9 when the blocks are in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 with the face portions Ill in opposed relation, thereby providing clearance for any tool inserted into the bore I9 of the sleeve. Likewise the recesses 22 are aligned with the bore I9 when the blocks are reversed into the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 with the face portions I 5 in opposed relation. As the blocks, when in the latter position, are adapted to engage smaller work than when in their other position the recesses 22 may be smaller in depth than the recesses 2| as obviously a smaller sized tool would generally be employed for use on the smaller work, in which case the sleeve I8 will be provided with a smaller sized bore I9 than the sleeve adapted for use with the blocks in their illustrated position. It will be apparent that when the blocks are in either of their respective positions, the tongues and grooves il prevent any lateral displacement of the blocks when clamping a piece of work so that similar pieces of work will be always held in exactly the same position in the vise with respect to the sleeve.
By providing the blocks 8 with two faces having inclined face portions of different widths, the two blocks illustrated will accommodate a very large percentage of the different sizes of work adapted to be held in the vise and will eliminate the necessity of providing a series of blocks for different sizes of work, thereby reducing tooling costs, etc.
It will .be apparent that the blocks 8 may be readily mounted on existing vises by merely milling grooves into one of the clamping faces .of the vise on which it is to Ibe installed, of a size to receive the tongues Il of the respective blocks, and providing holes for the mounting bolts I2.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a holding attachment for a clamping device or the like having opposed clamping and work engaging faces, the combination of a pair of like opposed blocks, means on the base of each block engageable with cooperating means on said clamping face of the clamping device for rigidly attaching the blocks thereto in any one of a plurality of positions, whereby different side faces of the respective blocks may be positioned in opposed relation, said clamping face having a tool receiving aperture therein Ibetween said blocks, the respective side faces of each block having longitudinally extending portions of different widths inclined with respect to the base thereof, so that by varying the positions of the blocks relative to each other, articles of diierent sizes may be engaged by one of the inclined portions of each block and the work engaging face of the clamping device, each of said Iblocks having recesses therein, alignable with said aperture to permit a tool inserted in said aperture to pass between said blocks when the latter are in their various positions.
2. In a holding attachment for a clamping device or the like having opposed clamping and work engaging faces, the combination of a pair of opposed blocks, means including a tongue on the -base of each block engageable with a corresponding groove in said clamping face of the clamping device for rigidly attaching each block thereto, said tongues being reversible in their respective grooves whereby different side faces of the respective blocks maybe positioned in opposed relation, said clamping face having a tool receiving aperture therein centered between said blocks, the respective side faces of each block having longitudinally extending portions of different widths, the narrowest portion being spaced farther from the base than the Widest portion, said portions being inclined towards each other, each at an angle of substantially 45 degrees with respect to the base, so that relatively large articles may be engaged by the wide portions of the blocks and the work engaging face of the clamping device, when the blocks are in one position, and relatively small articles may be engaged by the narrow portions of the blocks and the work engaging face of the clamping device, when the blocks are in a reversed position, each of said blocks having recesses therein alignable with said aperture to permit a tool inserted in said aperture to pass between said blocks when the latter are in their various positions.
