PORTABLE CABINET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,162, dated June 30, 1891.

To all whom. t may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNA IWI. BUGBEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Cabinets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to portable cabinets; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter, and subsequently claimed. Y

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View of one of my improved cabinets in use with the front hangings partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof, also partially broken away; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section thereof.

A represents the base or lower platform of my cabinet, which is preferably mounted' on casters a a, and B is a rear extension of said platform, secured thereto by hinges b b, and likewise preferably mounted on casters o.

C C designate strips or moldings applied along the upper side edges of the platform proper A to form stops for the side pieces D E of the cabinet.

F is the back piece of the cabinet, and this is rigid with the platform-extension B, there being also a strip G, rigid with said part B and with one edge of the back piece F. The side piece D is secured by hinges oto the said strip G, and the side piece E is similarly secured by hinges CZ to the back piece F.

Near the front of the platform A are sockets e, and when the side pieces D E are turned against the described platform end strips C C the said sockets receive pins f, so that the said side pieces may be kept firmly in place. These side pieces may be paneled, as shown at g in Fig. 3, or solid or ornameuted in any preferred manner, and are provided with upper interior transverse grooves h to receive the tongues i on the ends of the top piece or upper platform H. The said side pieces D E are further provided with openings j' near their upper front edges, which, when the parts are adjusted in place to form a cabinet, receive a curtain-rod J, from which any suitable hangings I may be suspended, the ends Serial No. 376,472. The sliding top piece or upper platform H may be as plain or as fancy as desired; but a very attractive piece of furniture may be made of the cabinet by adding the ornamental rail and glass door case shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

K is a flexible strap of fabric, leather, metal, 6o or other material secured to the under side of the top piece H, near the front edge thereof, and L is a hook or catch secured to said strap for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

The operation-of my device will be readily 6 5 understood from the foregoing description of its construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

M shows a trunk of any ordinary construction, the one shown being a small trunk, so 7o that its top N, when raised, will lean back against the back piece F of the cabinet, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Vhen the trunk is much taller, it might happen that the top thereof could not conveniently be raised up andY back, as shown, and in such cases the hook or catch L is caught in under the valance of the frontedge of the partiallyraised trunk-top, which latter is thereby suspended, and in either or any case the curtains 8o or hangings I may be drawn so as to conceal the trunk, whether open or closed.v This device will be found of especial use and convenience tothose living in hotels or boardinghouses, where space is limited, and where it may be desirable to have a trunk always accessible and yet to have the same out of sight, and my device may be made either simple or elaborate, being in itself an attractive and useful piece of furniture. 9o

When not in use, my device may be folded into very small compass for storage or transportation. The top piece II is first slid out of the grooves 7L and the rod J and pins k removed, and then the side piece E is folded back against the back piece F and the side piece D folded back against the just closed side'piece E, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.

veniently disposed thereon, the whole oeeupying but little spaeeand yet ready for immediate use.

Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a portable eabinet,theco1nbination, with a Dsuitable base or platform having sockets therein, of a rear extension hinged to the platform, a back piece rigid with the platformeXtension, a strip also rigid with the platformextension and one edge of the back piece, grooved side pieces, one of which is hinged to said back piece and the other to the strip rigid 15 thereon, strips seenred to the platform to form stops for the side pieces, pins for engagement with said platfor1n-soekets to hold said side pieces firmly in place against the stops, a top piece sliding in the grooves of said side pieces, and a eu rtain-rod connecting the aforesaid side pieces, substantially as set forth.
