LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,091, dated June 30, 1891.
Application filed February 9, 1891.v Serial No. 380.774. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY C. BEARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town and county of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door or Shutter Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Hy object is to provide a simple lock for a door, shutter, or other place which shall act automatically to lock the door or shutter when the latter is closed, and form a firm and secure fastening therefor, While being adapted to unlock easily to allow of the openingof the door, &c.; and the invention consists in the features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lock with handle raised to unlock; Fig. 2, a vertical elevation of the right end of the left-hand face-plate shown in Fig. 1, illustrating the shape and position of the catch or keeper; Fig. 3, a vertical elevation of the left end of the right-hand faceplate, showing` the fastening-pin, with the other'face-plate and keeper indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. ha rear view of the righthand face-plate of Fig. 1, partly broken away, and showing the construction of the shaft and the attachment of the operating-handle thereto.
A and B are two faceplates or boxes; C, a head or shaft; D, an-operating-handle, and E a catch or keeper.
The face-plates or boxes are made of any suitable forms or dimensions, the box B being fastened to the door or shutter and the box A to the casing in the proper relative position for the parts to engage and disengage, as hereinafter described. It will be understood that the form given to these boxes is merely one of the many forms in which they can be made, the only requisite being that the boxes shall affordsufficient support for the operating parts hereinafter described.
In the box B is journaled a head or shaft C, to which is attached a suitable handle D, by means whereof the head is revolved in one direction or the other. This head. is pro vided with one or more pins c c', which exment of the pins, as hereinafter described.
In the box A is a suitable opening through which the pins can pass as the door closes or opens. The upper side of this opening is beveled, as shown at e, Fig. 2, and the box is then cut away inside, so as to form a downwardly-projecting point or keeper E. The lower side of the opening in the boxAis also preferably beveled, as shown at e in the opposite direction to the bevel e. Vf
An ear d is preferably provided upon the handle D, adapted to be engaged by the bolt of any suitable lock in the case B for the purpose of locking the'handle, in order to prevent the door from being opened.
When the door is closed, the pin'c travels down the incline e, raising the handle D into the position shown in Fig. 1. After the pin has passed to the end of the incline the weight of the handle revolves the head toward the right, Fig. 3, bringing the pin behind the keeper, as shown, locking the door. The pin c may be used or not, as desired, the purpose of this pin being to travel upon the incline e to assist in revolving the head and raising the handle when the door is closed, in order to take part ot' the strain off of the fastening-pin c.
The door is unfastened by raising the handle D and revolving the head until the pin c is disengaged from the keeper.
1. The combination of abox B,ahead journaled therein and provided with a cylindrical pin c, a box A, provided with a beveled surface, against which such pin strikes and beneath which it passes, and a keeper behind which the pin rises and whereby it is held, substantially as described'.
2. The combination of a box B, a head journaled therein, provided with two pins, a box A, having inclined surfaces, against which snchpins strike, and a keeper behind which 011e of such pins rises and. by which it is held, E, behind which the piu c passes and wheresubstantially as described. by it is fastened, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the box B, tbehead C, journaled therein and provided with pins c HENRY C. BEARDSLEY.
c', having sleeves c, the box A, provided Titnessesz with beveled surfaces e e', adapted to engage C. A STOUCH, with the pins c c', respectively, and 2L keeper D. S. CLARK.
