UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE TV. ACKERMAN, OF SOUTH MILFORD, INDIANA.
PLOW ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,606, dated June 23, 1891.
Application filed December 8, 1890: $erial No. 373,908- (No model.)
To aZl whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 1V. ACKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Milford, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to an attachment for plows, and the objects in view are to provide an attachment of cheap and simple construction adapted to be applied to all ordinary plows and to serve the purpose of com;
pressing and holding down the dry straw, weeds, and other rubbish during the process of plowing, whereby the same are prevented from rising and choking the plow, thus impairing its action and rendering the operation more difficult.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation of a plow provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig 3 is a perspective in detail of the attachment.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an ordinary plow-beam or jointer, which. carries the plow-standard 2, at the lower end of which is secured the share 3, all of the usual construction.
at designates a pair of parallel. L-shaped straps applied to the opposite sides of the plow-beam, to which. it is connected removably by means of a pair of bolts 5, arranged above and below the beam. The lower ends of the straps are horizontally and rearwardly disposed, and in this instance each is provided with apair of perforations 6, those of one strap registering with those of the other strap, and through any two is passed a conneeting-bolt 7.
9 and 10 designate a pair of pendent straps, the upper ends of which are connected to the bolt 7 outside of the straps at. The strap 10 is straight and depends in a vertical line from the beam, while the strap 9, near its lower end, is laterally extended, forming the extension 12, the two straps being connected immediately above said extension by the transverse tie-bolt 13. The extremity of the extension 12 is downwardly bent and perforated to form a bearing 14, which is transversely opposite the bearing 15, formed in the lower end of the strap 10. In. these bearings 11 and 15 is journaled the axle or trunnions of a roller 16, which, by reason of the location of the bearings, extends laterally at one side of the plow.
The attachment may be changed so as to project to the opposite side of the plow, if desired, simply by removing the bolt 7 and half turning the suspension-straps and roller. The extended portion of the roller is upon the furrow side of the plow, as that is the side that is disturbed by the share, and when turned to the opposite side, as above described, is designed for left-hand plows.
I11 operation the roller precedes the share, crushing down all standing weeds, grass, loose hay, straw, stubble, &c., so that the same is easily turned in the formation of the furrow, and does not ride up and choke the plow.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described plow attachment, the same consisting of the opposite L-shaped clamping-straps provided with upper, lower, and rear openings, bolts passed through said openings, a pair of pendent straps connected to the rear bolt, which bolt is removable, one of said straps being laterally bent to form an extension and each of said straps terminating in bearing-openin gs, and a roller having j ournals mounted in the openings, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
G. W. ACKERMAN.
Witnesses:
GEORGE GUNN, GEORGE A. NESBITT.
