Description

P. W. BEACH.
NAIL SET.
No. 454,512. Patented June 23,1891.
l htmeow NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK YVESTLEY BEACH, OF BROOKS VALE, CONNECTICUT.
N Al L S ET SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,512, dated June 23, 1891.
Application filed January 27, 1891. Serial No. 379,332. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WEsTLEY BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooks Vale, in the county of NewHaven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail- Sets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tools for setting nails; and it has for its object to provide a simple device of this character which is so constructed as to permit it, when not in use, to be folded or turned upon a pivot to which it is attached and slid back into a handle suitable for carrying in the pocket.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nail-set constructed in accordance with my invention, the tool being shown as in condition for use. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the tool as it appears when inclosed within the handle.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a suitable hollow handle having extended from one of its ends the parallel arms B B, which are furnished with longitudinal slots C.
D is the nail-setting tool, which consists of a rectangular bar or rod of steel having one of its ends slightly larger than the other and its side faces tapered gradually from end to end. as shown.
The nail-set D is carried upon a transverse pivot E, the projecting ends of the pivot being retained within the slots C inthe arms B, within which slots they are freely movable.
The operation of the device is simple and readily understood. When it is proposed to use the tool, the same is moved out of its engagement with the handle, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and when not in use it may be readily turned upon its pivot and slid within the handle. The bosses F upon the side faces of the nail-set D engage the grooves G upon the inner faces of the arms B when the tool is in use, thus locking the nail-set in position for use. The arms C have sufficient resiliency to permit them to spring when engaged by the bosses or ribs F and to resume their normal position when the ribs or bosses are seated in the grooves G.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described nail-setting tool, the same comprising, in combination, a hollow handle provided at one of its ends with slotted springarms and grooves, as described, the nail-set mounted upon a pivot passed through the outer ends of the arms and provided with ribs and adapted to be turned upon the pivot and moved within the handle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK VVESTLEY BEACH.
