WIRE FENCE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN \V. EUCHANAN, of Smithville, in the countyof Vayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vire Fences, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in that particular class of wire fences in which the wires composing one or more panels may be tightened separately or individually, so as to take up slack and hold the wires as nearly parallel as practicable. In my fence the wires are secured at one end to a post and chains are attached to their other ends and passed through holes in another post located at any required distance from the first one. Keys or equivalent devices are inserted through links of the chains on the outer side of the second post, in order to hold the wires duly stretched and yet permit further adjustment of tension or complete detachment of the wires, as occasion may require.

In accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents 1ny improved fence in perspective. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of lever employed in stretching the fence-wires.

Several Wires a are stretched between two opposite posts I) 11. They are secured at one end to the post I) and passing intermediately through smaller posts 0 and slotted spacing boards (Z are adjustably and detachably secured to the other post I) by the means of the chainseand keys or large nails f. The chains 6 are attached to the free ends of the said wires to and drawn to the requisite tension through horizontal holes in the post Z1. Then the keys f are inserted, one through a link of each chain c on the outer side of said post I), thus securing the wires taut. By this means any slack of the individual wires may be readily taken up whenever it shall be found to exist, and at the same time provision is made for releasing the wires from the postb, so that they may be quickly slackened to allow passage of persons, stock, or teams, or removed altogether, if required.

As a means for stretching the wires to a certain tension, I prefer to use a lever having at its butt-end a curved spring for insertion in the chain links and a fulcrum-block, which is in practice placed against the end or chainpost I).

\Vhat I claim is 1. A wire fence having each of its wires provided with a short length of chain at one end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a wire fence, the combination, with two posts, one of which is provided with a series of apertures, of aseries of wires having one end secured to one of the posts and their other ends provided with short lengths of chains, said chains being passed through the apertures of the post, and keys passed through the links of the chains, substantially as herein shown and described.
