GRAPPLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,950, dated May 26, 1891.

Application filed March 12, 189].- Serial No. 384,802. (No model.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL J. REESE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grapples; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention relates to grapples for carrying powder kegs or barrels; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of the invention. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are detail views showing the several parts, and Fig". 6 a perspective View showing the grapple in use.

A and B represent the two arms or hooks by which the keg is grasped, as shown in Fig.

6 of drawings.

0 represents the locking-bar, and D the connecting-bar.

The inner ends of the hook Aand lockingbar 0 are pivoted together by the bolt a, and the inner end of the connecting-bar D is piv- At a point about midway between the two bolts CL and c the handle E is attached to the bar 0, the hook A being provided with a transverse areshaped slot or recess e, adapted to receive the shank of the handle E when the grapple is locked. The outer end of the locking-bar C is provided with a groove or slot f, adapted to receive the shank of the bolt F, projecting up througha longitudinal slotf in the hook A.

In the hook B are three or more bolt-holes l), and the connecting-bar D is provided with corresponding holes d, the two parts being connected by the bolt G, passing through any two coinciding holes.

In operation, the required length or reach of the grapple being determined, the bolt G is passed through coinciding holes in the hook B and connecting-bar D and the two parts clamped together by the thumb-nut g. The bolt F is then loosened and slid along the slot f and out of the slotf, and the locking-bar 0 being thus released the handle E is turned, projecting the hooks A and B in opposite directions sufficiently to allow them to pass over the heads of the keg. The handle is then turned back, drawing the parts togetheragain, and the bolt F is slid into the slot f and secured by the thumb-nutf.

In a grapple, the combination of the hook A, having a slot f to receive the bolt F, and a transverse slot 6, the locking-bar C,pivoted at its inner end to the inner end of the hook A and having in its outer end a slotf, the connecting-bar D, pivoted at its inner end to thelocking-loar O and having bolt-holes d, the hook 13, having bolt-holes b, and the handle E, secured to the locking-bar 0, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
