CHOPPI-NG-KNIFE.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. HUTCHIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechanic Falls, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chopping-Knives; and I do deelarethe fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in knives for inincing meat, vegetables, fruit, and other articles into small fragments; and it consists in the details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, which form a part of this specification, and as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a mincing-knife embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in perspective of the handle and clamping-nut, and Figs. 3 and at are enlarged perspective details of the blades of the knife.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the handle, formed at its lower end with a screwthreaded shank B for the reception of the slotted collar 0 and clamping-nut D. The blades E and F are similar in form and size, and their cutting-edges are preferably upon an arc of a circle, as is common in this class of knife-blades. The blade E is provided with a slot E, which extends from the edge of the blade at its longitudinal center about one-half the width of the blade. The blade F is provided at the longitudinal center of its upper edge with a cut-away portion or re cess F, having an enlarged portion F from the lower edge of which a narrow slot F extends downward for a short distance.

The lower end of the shank B of the handle is provided with a T-shaped portion B and with a longitudinal slot B which slot passes through the enlargement B at right angles to the direction of its length and extends from the extreme lower end of the shank B to a point adjacent to the screwthreaded portion thereof.

The collar 0 is provided at its lower edge with slots 0, corresponding in width with the thickness of the blades E and F.

In connecting the blades together the blade E is first slipped over the upper edge of the blade F, the central port-ion of the blade F being received within the slot E. The slot 13 of the shank B is then passed over the upper edge of the blade E at one side of the opening or recess F in the blade F, and when the T-shaped port-ion has been forced down a sufficient distance to bring it opposite the enlarged portion F of the recess F the shank is forced to one side, so as to cause the enlarged T-shaped lower end of the shank to enter the recess. The collar 0 is then placed in position, so that the slots in its lower edge will engage the upper edges of the blades, and-the nut D is screwed down firmly, thus securely locking the parts together. By this construction the lower end of the shank is provided with but a single slot, and is thus much stronger and more durable than would be the case if several slots were necessary. The construction is such as to permit the several parts to be readily separated for cleaning, and a positivelockin g device is provided which will prevent the blades from being accidentally loosened or detached.

Having-thus described'my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1's- '1. The combination, with the handle having a screw-threaded portion and an enlarged and slotted lowerend, as described, of theblade F, having a cut-away portion F corresponding in size and form with the enlarged portion of the shank, and a set-nut upon the screw-threaded portion of the shank, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with the screw-threaded shank having an enlarged and slotted lower end, of the blades E and F, slotted and recessed, respectively, as described, the collar 0, having slots in its lower edge adapted to engage the upper edges of the blades, and a set-nut upon the shank above the collar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
