HAN D-SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,469, dated December 19, 1899. Application filedhugust 25, 1899- Serial No. 728,407. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST H. TRIESCI-I- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide scissor-pattern hand-shears capable of longer cut in proportion to length of blades than those commonly employed; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularlyset forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, said shears being somewhat similar to those disclosed in my application filed May 27, 1899, Serial No. 718,469.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a plan view of broken hand-shears in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, a sectional View of the same, indicated by line2 2 in the first figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A B represent the handles, and O D the blades, of my improved hand-shears. Forked forward portions of the handles are crossed one upon another and connected by pivots b at the crossing-points. Each blade is provided with an offset tang d in loose engagement with a recess in the handle, back of the fork of same, and a pivot-rivet e engages each blade-tang and adjacent handle. A slide in the form of a rivet f engages the fork branches of each handle and a play-slot g in the blade that has its tang in pivotal connection with the other handle, the slide and play-slot being forward of the crossing of the handle-forks.
As herein shown, an antifrictionsleeve it may be arranged on each slide f in the corresponding play-slot g, and one branch of each handle-fork'is provided with a spacing-shoulder t in opposition to the adjacent blade.
The angle of the play-slots may be varied from what is herein shown, and if said slots be more lengthwise of the blades the shears will have less opening than is herein shown, although the separation of the blades back of the crossings of the handle-forks will be more rapid than otherwise.
From the foregoing itwill be understood that shears of anylength of blade made in accordance with myinvention may be readily spread to have greater length of out than is possible with single-pivot shears, and the degree of opening between blades may be more or less in proportion to the angle of the playslots 9. Hence my improved shears may be organized with especial reference to cutting of different kinds of material.
While I have shown and particularly described one form of my improved handshears, the details of construction may be somewhat varied without departure from the scope of my invention as, for instance, it would be practical to have the slidesf on the blades and the play slots 9 in the fork branches of the handles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pair of shears consisting of handles having forked forward branches in crossed pivotal connection, blades having pivotal connection with the handles back of the crossingpivot, a slide and play-slot for same constituting a connection between each blade and forward end of the branch pertaining to the handle other than that to which said blade is pivoted, and forward spacing-shoulders constituting parts of the handle branches in opposition to the blades.
2. A pair of shears consisting of handles having forked forward branches in crossed pivotal connection, blades having ofi'set rear tangs for which recesses are provided in the handles, pivots connecting the blade-tangs and said handles, a slide and play-slot for same constituting a connection between each blade and forward end of the branch pertaining to the handle other than that to which said blade is pivoted, and forward spacingshoulders constituting parts of the handle branches in opposition to the blades.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee,in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST H. TRIESOHMANN.
