SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,716, dated May 19, 1891.
Application iiled January 26 1 8 91.
To all whom it 11mg/ concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. MCKEE, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Shears, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The distinguishing feature of' the present improvement is the offset whereby that portion of the handle which is grasped by the operator is raised above the level of the plane of the blades, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan ot' the improved shears; Fig. 2, a view in perspective of the shears, the point of View being at the side of the shears; and Fig. 3, a rear end elevation of the shears.
The same letters rof reference denote the same parts.
The shears A are of the usual construction, saving as modiiedand supplemented by the present improvement. The two parts ce a of the shears are pivoted to each otherby means of the pin B. The blades C C are of the usual form, with the exception that the lower blade O is rounded on its underside to form apro-v jection c upon the under side of the blade of the shape substantially as is indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, and at the heel of both blades is a downwardly-extended projection c. The prof jection extends slightly below the level of the projection c. Its object is to enable the shears to be properly held in use.
Serial No. 379,217. (No model.)
"The handles D D of the shears extend directly upward from their point of connection 'with the blades, as shown substantially at d d, and thence extend horizontally, substantially as shown at d d. In practice the liandle portions d d are about four inches from the level of the blades. E represents the spring for opening the shears. Its form may be varied, but it is attached to the upright portions d d of the handles. The handles in other respects may be formed in the usual manner. j
I claim* l. The combination ofthe blades and the handles, said handles extending from their point of connection with the blades directly upward at right angles to the plane of said blades, as shown, and thence horizontally, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described shears having the handle portions d d raised above the level of the blades, said blades having the downwardly-extended projections c c, and the blade C', having the rounded projection c,-
substantially as described.
fitness my hand this 14th day oi' January, 1891.
CHARLES ll. MCKEE.
