attommg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. ORONAN, OF TIPTONVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM J. HATFIELD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
B U C K L E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,692, dated May 19, 1891. Application filed October 30, 1890- Serial No. 369,842. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES W. CRONAN, a citizen of they United States of- America, residing at Tiptonville, in the county of Lake and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in buckles.
The object of the invention is to provide a buckle which will be made up of two parts hinged to each other, one of the parts or the base-plate being provided with a hook formed integral with the main frame of the buckle and with means for pivotally connecting the tongue-frame of the buckle thereto, said tongue-frame having means for preventing other than pivotal movement on the baseframe, and with an extended portion, which is adapted to close the hook.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the frame. 1
The buckle is made up of two parts A and B, the part A consisting of an open frame, the rear bar a thereof having formed thereon projecting portions a and between them a recess c, said frame also carrying a hook A. This base-frame is preferably made up of malleable metal, as the projections 01/ are adapted to be upset or bent so as to clasp the bar I; of the tongue or pivoted frame. This tongue or pivoted frame is constructed substantially as shown-that is to say, it has a loop portion, from the front bar of which the tongues b project. The rear bar I) has a hook-closing portion B, formed centrally thereon, which extends at an angle from the tongues, so that when the ends of the tongues I) rest upon the cross-bar of the base-frame this portion B will be adjacent to or in contact ters Patent, is
with the end of the hook A, so as to prevent a ring or other connection becoming displaced from the hook. Centrally, the frame B has a projecting nib or lug c, which is adapted to lie within the recess 0 at the center of the frame A, and this nib or lug prevents the lateral movement of the tongue-frame upon the baseframe when the parts are connected to each other.
A buckle constructed as hereinbefore described, being made up of only two parts, can be cheaply manufactured, and the parts can be readily assembled, and it will be observed that a strap can be passed, after being secured by the tongues, through the open portion of the tongue-frame, so that said tongueframe serves as a keeper for the end of the strap and leaves the hook readily accessible.
It will also be observed that when the tongues 0 I) rest upon the bar of the frame A the rear portionof the nib or lug 0 will contact with the rear wall of the recess; also, that the projection .B will contact with the endof the hook, thus providinga construction in which all these features coact to relieve the projections a from strain, as these parts being upset are liable to be the weakest points in the buckle.
The buckle hereinbefore described may be used for numerous purposes-to wit, as a suspender-buckle, back-band, or. trace carrier, or, in fact, almost anywhere it is desired to provide a combined buckle and snap-hook; and the configuration or shape of the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 9O 1. A buckle made up of two parts, consisting of a frame A, having a cross-bar against which the tongues of a pivoted frame impinge, a hook formed integral with the frame, a recess in front of said hook and lugs for 5 pivoting thereto aframe B, said frame B comprising a loop, one of the bars thereof having tongues formed integral therewith and an inclined extended portion adapted to move beneath the end of the hook, a central nib which lies within the recess in the frame A, and a bar having rounded portions over which the projections or lugs a of the hascby a strap can be caused to engage with the 1111-1110 are u pset, substantially as shown, and tongues and then be passed through the open for the purpose set forth. I ing in said frame and the hook closed, for
