UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS AUGUSTE, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED CIGAR-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15,2 l 5, dated November 29, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs AUGUSTE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Oigar Ho1der and Smoking-Tube; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1' is a longitudinal central section of my invention, showing its operation. Fig. 2 is a detached longitudinal central section'of the sponge-holder on a larger scale than the previous figure. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the employment of a removable sponge-holder arranged in the interior of the smoking-tube, and provided with a perforated partition and cap in such a manner that said sponge-holder will not obstruct the draft, and that it can be readily detached from the smoking-tube and the sponge can be removed and cleaned without disturbing the other parts of the smoking-tube, and
by these means a sponge saturated with camphor or other suitable material can be kept in contact with the smoke, and any desired flavor can be given to the same.
A represents a cigar-holder. made of sheet metal or other suitable material, and composed of a tube or reservoir, a, from which rises a pointed tube, 1), and suitable wings to hold the cigar which is on said pointed tube, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A ring, 0, which is soldered or otherwise secured to that side of the reservoir a opposite the pointed tube 12, serves to hold the cigar-holder. The reservoir a is provided with a movable cap, (1, which can be readily taken off in order to clean out the interior of said reservoir, and secured in this cap is the mouth-piece e, as clearly shown The mouth-piece extends through the cap (I, and its inner end is provided with a screw-thread to screw into the end of the sponge-holder B. This spongeholder is composed of a tubular socket, f, with perforated partition 9 at some distance from its end, and with a cap, it, which is also perforated, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 8 of the drawings.
That portion of the tubular socket f between the partition 9 and the end which screws on the mouth-piece is perforated with holes 11 to give free access to the smoke, and that portion of said socket between the partition 9 and cap 7b is intended to receive the sponge O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The holes in the cap and in the partition allow the smoke to pass freely through the sponge, and if the latter is saturated with a solution of camphor or of any essential oil or other flavor the constituents of the smoke which are injurious to the health can be eliminated and any desired flavor can be imparted to it.
By removing the cap d of the cigar-holder free access is obtained to the tubular socket f, the cap 71 can be easily taken off and the sponge removed for the purpose of cleaning it or charging it with the desired flavor, and when introduced into the cigar-holder the tubular socket with the sponge does not in the least obstruct the draft. The smoke plays freely all round the sponge and passes to the mouth-piece without hinderanee, and the cigar-holder can be used with or without the sponge-holder, as may be most desirable.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-
