UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL E. REILLY, OF MONTESANQ, VASI-IINGTON.
SPECIFICATION forming Part Of Letters PatenNO. 452,112, dated May 12, 1891.
Application led December 16, 1890.V Serial No. 374,892. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern: M
Be it known that I, MICHAEL E. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montesano, in the county ot' Ghehalis and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Razor-Sirop, of which the following is a specification. l
The invention relates to improvements in raZor-strops.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of razor-strops and provide a device adapted to be quickly arranged to present a strap, canvas, or hone-faces to a razor.
The rinvention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a razor-stropconstructed in accordance with this invention, the lever being raised. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the lever being closed to tighten the strap. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig 4 is a detail perspective view of the lever, illustrating the manner of securing the strap. Fig. 5 is a detail View illustrating the strop constructed of one continuous piece.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body ot a razor-strop, having one end 2 formed into a handle portion and provided between the handle portion 2 and the other end with hone-faces 3, which are adapted to be exposed for use by removing-a strap 4 from a stationary roll or cylindrical bar 5, arranged at the end 6 of the body and provided with a recess 7 to receive the end 6. The strap 4 has one end 8 secured to a lever 9, and it may be one continuous piece of material, such as leather, and pass around the roll or cylindrical bar 5 and be secured tothe .body 1; but it is preferable to construct the strop as illustrated in Fig. 3 ot the accom panying drawings and connect the strap 4 with a strip 10 ot canvas or other suitable material desirable for use in a razor-strop.
The ends 8 and 11 of the strap 4 and strip 10 are arranged in curved grooves 12 and 13 in the outer faces of the lever 9 and the handle portion 2 of the body, and the said ends 8 and 11 are secured in the grooves 12 and 13 by keys or pins 14 and 15, and are passed around the pins, and arespread thereby,`
and are prevented being withdrawn from the contracted or narrow mouth of the curved grooves 12 and 13, which are approximately cylindrical.
In removing the strap from the cylindrical bar or roll 5 to expose the hone-faces the lever 9 is raised or separated from the handle portion 2. as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, and when the strap is inside it is tightened by bringing the lever 9 against and in cont-act with the handle portion 2, as illustrated in Fig, 2 of the accompanying drawings, and the lever 9 is shaped to form a section of the handle of the razorstrop. The lever 9 is provided at its inner end with an ear 16, which forms a continuaf tion of a rib 17 on the inner face of the lever, and is provided with a perforation 18, and is arranged in a recess 19 in the inner face of the handle portion 2 of the body, and is pivotally connected to the latter by a pin 2O passing through the body and the perforation y 1S of the lever.
It will be seenthat the razor-strop is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is adapted to readily expose its hone-faces or its strap and canvas, and that the latter can be readily removed from the strop and its tension adjusted by means ofthe keys or pins, which are readily removable and can be quickly replaced to take up or let out the strap.
1. A razor-strop comprising the body provided with a groove having a contracted mouth or opening, the lever hinged to the body and provided with a similar groove, and the strap having its ends arranged in said groove and secured therein by pins or keys,
the latter and the strap ends together filling IOO the strap passing over the transverse bnr and l reooss to receive the sinne, und the strap llavlinving its ends connected to the body and the lever, substantially as described.
3. A razor-strop comprising the body hav- 5 in g one end formed into L handle portion and provided between the handle portion and its other end with hone-faees, the lever conforming to the configuration of thelmndle portion 2 and provided with a perforated ear hinged to the body, the cylindrical bar 5, arranged :it one end of the body and provided with a ing its end secured to the lever mid the body, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL E. REILLY.
