NILS PETER BENSON, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
EXTENSIBLE ROCKING BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,994, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed July 1, 1889- $erial No. 316,215. (No model.) I
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NILs PETER BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Rocking Boards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved extensible rocking board of the class designed for outdoor amusement and exercise, in the use of which one or more persons sit on each end of a balance-support provided with rockers resting upon a suitable stationary platform to which they are properly secured.
The object, therefore, of my improvement is to provide a device of the class stated which shall be simple, durable, and safe; to which ends my invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, partially in section, of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line a; m, Fig. 1. plan view of one end of my device.
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 indicates a suitable stationary platform to which is fastened the upright loops 18. Upon this platform rest the rockers 2 2, provided with pins 3 3, centrally secured to the outside of each, said pins being confined within the loops 18, as shown.
Secured to the outside of each rocker by means of screws, bolts, mortising, or in any suitable manner, are the standards at, which are attached at their upper extremities to stationary guide-beams 5, to which are fastened both at the top and bottom the metal plates 15 15, forming inner guideways for the reception of sliding bars 7 7, of which there are four in number, two on each end of the (le vice, their inner extremities meeting in the center when the bars 7 or the frames which Fig. 3 is a.
compose them are closed or when the device occupies the least possible space. These sliding bars are also furnished with metal plates 15 at top and bottom, to give strength and durability, and also to lessen the friction incidentto moving within the guideways. One of each pair of the sliding bars 7 is somewhat longer than the other. To the top of the outer extremity of 'each of the longer bars is fastened one end of the seat-board 6, the op posite end of said board being supported by one extremity of a metal brace 14:, which curves downward, forming a step to assist a person in reaching the seat-board. The other end of said brace is fastened to the under side of the shorter sliding bar, as shown. In front of each seat-board, within easy reach thereof and supported by standards resting upon sliding bars 7, is the hand-piece 8. Attached to the sliding bars and extending downward in front of the seat-board is the footrest 9. Near the inner extremities of each pair of said sliding bars 7 is a rod 10, one extremity of said rod being made fast to the inside of one of the bars 7, the other extremity being threaded and adapted to enter the other bar, which is provided with a suitable socket for its reception. The threaded extremity of each rod 10 is provided with a nut having a lever 11, between which and the adjacent bar is a washer 12. By turning levers 11 sliding bars 7 may be tightened or loosened within their grooved ways, as maybe desired. Near one extremity of each guide-beam 5, and fastened to the under side thereof, is a hook 13. These hooks are turned up on the inside of their adjacent sliding bars 7 as guides to the bars 7, and also prevent them from sliding entirely out during extension, since a plate 16 at the foot of each rod 10 comes in contact with said book, which is placed at the limit of extension. There is a brace 17 connected with beams 5, said brace being centrally located and elevated sufficiently to allow free access to secure levers 11, whatever the position of the sliding frames formed by bars 7 and their connections.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- The combination, with the rocking frame having two bars of unequal lengths upon each In testimony whereof I affix my signature in of its ends, of a seat resting upon the end of presence of two witnesses. each of the longer bars of each side, and a metal brace having a depressed central portion and having its opposite ends secured to the shorter bar and to the seat at each end of the frame, forming a step, as described.
NILS PETER BENSON.
