Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HARRIET H. THOMPSON, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ABDOMINAL SUPPOPLTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,193, dated November 22, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, HAREIET H. THOMP- SON, ofthe city of Vashington, and District ot Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Abdominal Supporters 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thexeon, making a part otl this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination ot'a bach-brace, an abdominal supporter, and a pad for the crotch, with adjustable and yielding lacers and straps for the purpose of supporting the spine or small ot the back, the abdomen, and womb.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describeits operation and constructioil, as t'ollows :v
The invention is made ot buckskin or any light material, so as to be most comfortable to the wearer.
A represents an upright brace about eight inches high, that tits across the small of' the i bacl ,on the spine, just above the hips, the
lower part ot the bracebeing about ten inches wide. It is a light pad stiti'ened with whalebones covered with buckshin and laced down behind, as at B, and has two straps, C O, at-
tached at each side, near the top, to buckle around the body and to be adjusted by lacers D D, that give them a yielding quality. Lower straps, E E, are also connected to the back-brace A by adjustable and yielding laeers F. The tongues of these straps are fastened by buckles G G to an abdominal supporter, H, which is a light and stiff pad about thrte inches in height and above six l inches wide, that lits in front at the lower part ofthe abdomen, to support the abdomen.
I have two light buckskin ribbons or straps, l JJ, the ends ot' which are buttoned onto the lower sides ot' the brace A and supporter H. To these straps J J a small soft bucksliin pad or cushion, K, stuffed with cotton or hair, about four inches long and two inches wide, is attached by two bands,LL, passing around the cushion. The straps J J can be lengthened or shortened, as required, and pass under the bands L L, so as to be kept flat to the cushion K and tit in the crotch of the wearer, for the purpose of strengthening and supporting` the womb or lower part of the abdomen, and relieve the pains incident tothe distention and falling ot' the womb.
The advantages of these supporters combined are their adjust-able and yielding-qualities to suit the shapes and sizes of small or large persons, and being` so very light, and binding on all sides, they answer i'ully the purposes intended and are most comfortable, i economical, and beneficial to the wearer, al- ,l lowing the wearer to work in any position or posture, and strengthening the body. They have been fully tested, and they have afforded i the greatest relief and even e'ected cures.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. The baclrbrace A, abdominal supporter H, and cushion K, with their adjustable and yieldl ing straps O, E, and J, when constructed, arl ranged, and combined as herein described, and
for the purposes set forth.
