Description

(No Model.) W. H. REIFF.
TOY TARGET Patented May 5, 1891.
UNiTn TATES ATENT FF-ICE.
\VILLIAM H. REIFF, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO J. IVALKER CLARK, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY TARG ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,725, dated May 5, 1891. Application filed February 3, 1891. Serial No. 880,066- (No model.)
device for purposes of amusement which shall call forth the exercise of more or less skill upon the part of the operator.
In carrying out my invention I employ a suitable supporting-piece having one or more apertures or recesses formed therein, adjacent to which are placed object balls or buttons. The object of the device is to strike these object balls or buttons and knock them into the apertures or recesses by means of a captive ball connected with the supporting-piece by an elastic connection. By employing a series of these object balls or buttons and appropriate apertures therefor shots of different degrees of difficulty may be obtained.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my target apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line w a; of Fig, 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the same, and Fig. 4 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1 of amodification of my invention, employing a series'of object balls or buttons.
A is asuitable supporting-piece, preferably flat, which may be made of card-board or any other convenient material. B is an aperture formed therein and provided with a notch b.
C is an object ball or button, which is connected with the back of the piece A by a connection D. The object ball or button 0 is supported in the notch b, as shown in the drawings, so as to be exposed upon the face of the supporting-piece A.
E is a captive ball, connected with the piece A by means of an elastic connection F. By extending and then releasing the elastic connection F the captive ball E will be projected forward toward the object O, and if properly aimed will strike the object and knock'it from the notch Z2 through the aperture B. It will be found that more or less skill is re quired to properly aim the captive ball E.
For convenience of construction I prefer to attach the object ball or button 0 to the piece A in the manner shown1. 6., by means of an elastic band, which may be attached to the piece'A by passing the loops of the band D through clips on a, formed in the pieceA. The elasticity of the band D tends to draw the ball or button 0 through the aperture 13, when it is released from the notch b.
In Fig. 4 a modification of my apparatus is shown, in which there are a series of apertures 13, preferably arranged in curve or arc of a circle, with an appropriate object ball or button 0 for each aperture supported by the elastic band D. will be required to strike the differently-situated objects 0 with the captive ball E, and it calls forth the exercise of considerable skill to strike all of the objects in succession which may be made the object of the game.
WVhile the minor details of construction, which have been shown are preferred, it is apparent that they may be varied without departing from the principles of my invention.
That I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A target-game apparatus consisting of a supporting-piece provided with one or more notched apertures or recesses, an object ball or button attached to said supporting-piece and supported in the notch of the aperture therein, and a captive ball connected with said supporting-piece by an elastic connection, substantially as and for the purpose specified.-
2. In a target-game apparatus, the combination of a supporting-piece provided with a notched'aperture, an object ball or button connected with one side of said supportingpiece and adapted to be supported in the notch of said aperture and presented upon the other side thereof, and a captive ball connected with said supporting-piece by an elastic connection, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Different degrees of skill 3. In a target-game apparatus, the cornbicaptive ball with the piece A, substantially as nation of the supporting-piece A, provided and for the purpose specified. 10 with one or more apertures B, having notches In testimony of which invention I have b, one or more object balls or buttons 0, hereunto set my hand.
5 adapted to be supported in the notches b, WVILLIAM H. REIFF.
elastic connection D, connecting said object Witnesses: balls or buttons with the piece A, captive bail JOHN A. BRAMLEY,
E, and elastic connection F, connecting the ERNEST HOWARD HUNTER.
