TRAVELING-FLAT CARDlNG-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,367, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed July 31, 1890.
T0 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. CANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Traveling-Flat Oarding-Engines, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to traveling-flat carding-engines, and is applicable to carding-engines in which there is a lateral opening between any part or all of the flexible bend and the main bend, through which air, flyings, or any substance can pass from side to side of the bends. It is especially applicable to any carding-engine in which the inner faces of the flexible and the main bends are in the same plane orsubstantiallyin the same plane.
The object of my improvement is to prevent the passage of air, flyings, or substances of any kind through such an opening and to steady the flexible bend in position. To this end I close any such opening between the flexible and the main bends by a coveringplate mounted upon the main bend on the side thereof opposite to the brackets which support the flexible bend.
Figure 1 of the annexed drawings is a partial side view of acarding-engine to which my improvement is applied. Figs. 2, 3,and etare partial sections of different modifications of the same, taken at the line S Sof Fig. 1. Fig. 2 represents the application of the coveringplate in a case when the flexible bend is over the main bend with theinner faces of the two bends in the same plane or substantially in the same plane. In Figs. 3 and 4 the flexible bend is represented with arabbet or recess in its interior face, whilein Fig. 2 no such rabbct appears. In Fig. at the covering-plate is represented as being an integral part of the main bend and as being proportionately thicker than it is represented to be in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a section of the flexible and main bends and covering-plate through one of the supporting-brackets. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the connection between the flexible bend and the supporting slides or brackets therefor, indicating the chain of traveling flats by dotted lines, and showing Serial No. 360,586. (No model.)
various rollers and supporting-brackets employed in connection with said chain.
In the figures, Frepresents the frame of the carding-engine; B, the main bend; Z), the flexible bend; O, the main cylinder; O, the shaft of the main cylinder; a, the coveringplate; a the space between the flexible and the main bends, through which substances could pass from side to side of the bends were it not for the covering-plate a.
s 8, Figs. 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6,arescrews orother fastenings, by the aid of which the coverin plate a is attached to the main bend. h
P P P P are protectors for the edges of the wire clothing upon the main cylinder or upon the flats.
f designates the flats, and p pp the brackets which support the studs that carry the flexible bend.
In Figs. 1 and 6 the covering-plate a a is represented by dotted circular arcs; but its outline might have a different shape from that represented in said figures. The plate will serve its purpose as a covering-plate if it shall be everywhere sufficiently wide to substantially prevent the passage of substances of any kind through the space a a from side to side of the bends in any position of adjustment of the flexible bend.
In Figs. 2 and 3, a is represented as a somewhat thin covering-plate, preferably of steel, which is of sufficient width to overlap a portion of the main bend, a portion of the flexible bend, andthe space between them. A It prevents the passage of substances of any kind through the space a 003.
In Fig. 3 both the flexible bend b and the main bend B are rabbeted on their inner faces. Generally I prefer to make the depth of the rabbet in the flexible bend and the depth of the rabbct in the main bend substantially equal to the thickness of the plate a, a, so that the inner faces of these three parts shall be in the same plane.
In Fig. 2 no rabbet is represented either in the flexible or in the main bend; but the 9 inner faces of both of those pieces are in the same plane with the outer face of the covering-plate ct.
In Fig. i the plate a is represented as being an integral part of the main bend, and as being proportionately thicker than it is represented to be in Figs? and The plate a, when formed as a separate plate, may be attached to the main bend B by bolts, screws, rivets, or other fastenings. I11 Figs. 1, 2, and 3 countersink-headed screws are represented as put through the plate a from the inside and screwed into the main bend. I prefer to attach the plate to the main bend by the aid of such screws. Whenever the plate a is used, the flexible bend b is bounded, confined, and steadied in position between the plate a on the inside and the brackets or their accessories, which support the studs that carry the flexible bend, on the outside; and this is a distinct improvement. A part of one such bracket 11 is represented in Fig. 5 with the flexible bend 1) between it and the plate a.
In Fig. 6 I have shown supporting and adjusting slides p p p of a kind in common use. These slides are slotted, as at p, to permit of adjustment, and are secured in place by bolts and nuts 11 One of. these slides namely, that lettered pis represented as carrying a pin or stud .9, which is secured to it in a fixed position by one end, while the other end of the stud enters a circumferential slot 2f in the flexible bend. Another of these slides 19 is represented as carrying a stud s, which is secured to it in a fixed position by one end, while the other end of the stud enters a round hole in the flexible bend. The third slide or bracket p is represented as having a slot t into which the pin 5 enters, the pin being secured to the flexible bend in afixed position. In connecting either end of the flexible bend with its adjacent adjusting and supporting slide or bracket the slot may be in the bracket or the pin may be secured to the latter, as maybe preferred. The screws q qg if turned one way orthe other, cause the slides or brackets to move toward or away from the axis of the main cylinder. The slides or brackets lettered r and r are those which in practice support the grinding-roller and the roller by which the chains carrying the flats are tightencd.
In Figs. 2 and tare shown well-known forms of protectors for the edges of the workingsurfaces of the card-clothing upon the main cylinder and upon the flats. One of these protectors P consists of an angle-plate placed upon the leather or other backing of the cardclothing of each of the flats and screwed or riveted in place, one portion thereof standing in a vertical plane parallel with the teeth upon the said card-clothin g. Another proteeter P consists of a ring or plates secured by screws to the end of the cylinder 0 and projecting at the side of the teeth on the cylinder to or near the points thereof. The protector P consists of a short piece of iron or steel wire of rectangularsection. The leather or other backing of the card-clothing of the flat is extended outward beyond the teeth of the said clothing between the wide face of the flat and the protector P, and the ends of the protectorP are bent around the edges 01": the flat and compressed into narrow grooves, which run lengthwise of the flat near to the edges of the wide flange to which the clothing is fastened. The protector P consists of a ring or plates screwed to the end of the cylinder and extending alongside of and parallel with the teeth on the cylinder and flats. Any other good terms of protector may be substituted. I do not claim the invention of the protectors herein described.
Although I have herein shown the flexible bend placed in substantially the same vertical plane with the main web of the main bend and the main bend notched or recessed atits outer edge, with the flexible bend located in the notch or recess, I do not herein lay claim to this feature per se, inasmuch as it is claimed in an application filed on even date herewith by Ohanning \Vhitaker, oi Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, and myself as joint inventors, and bearing the serial number 360,588.
I claim 1. The combination, with the flexible bend and the main bend, of the brackets carried by the main bend and supporting the flexible bend, and the covering-plate on the opposite side of the main bend from the brackets, sub stantially as described. a
2. The combination, with the flexible bend, rabbeted as described, of the main bend and the eovering-plate thereon projecting over the rabbeted portion of the flexible bend, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the flexible bend and the main bend, both rabbeted, as described, ot the covering-plate secured to the main bend and projecting over the rabbeted portion of the flexible bend, substantially as described.
