SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,754, dated April 21, 1891.

Be it known that l, WILLIAM Il. GOLDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, Sta-te of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cans or receptacles designed more especially for holding printers ink, paste, or glue; and it has for its object to provide simple means for preventing the evaporation and the formation of skin on the contents of the can. I provide an interior sliding cover or lid made tapering at the center, so as to allow for the ready escape of the air, and provide the same at its apex with a removable cork or plug. I also provide, preferably, a handle or bail to said sliding cover or lid to aid in the removal of the same when desired.

Other objects and advantages of theinvention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is avertical central section t-hrough a can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same with the outer cover broken away.

Like letters of reference indicate like part-s in both views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter,A designates a can or receptacle of any suitable construction and capacity and provided with a removable cover B, having a depending ange to embrace the upper edge of the can, and in this instance shown as engaging the annular bead a.

O is a sliding non-reticulated cover or lid provided with au annular depending flange l), which is made a comfortable lit to the interior of the can, as seen in Fig. l, the said cover being made conical or tapered toward its center and at the center provided with an opening surrounded by the vertical tiange c,

D is a removable plug, cork, or, it may be, a screw-cap closing the opening in the cover O.

E is a bail or handle, preferably of wire, secured upon one side to the top of the cover C in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by the clip or lug d, which serves as a hinge for the said bail, permit-ting it to be turned up into a vertical position when it is desired to lift the sliding lid out of the can. It normally lies fiat upon the upper face of the lid, as seen in Figs. l and 2. In practice this lid is arranged, as shown in the drawings, with the cork or plug in place and serves to prevent evaporation of the ink or formation of skin thereon. IVhen large quantities of the ink are desired, the lid may be removed and the ink poured out or otherwise removed. When only a small quantity is desired at a time, the cork or plug D is removed and pressure applied upon the lid, when the contents will be forced out of the hole at the center. The taper of the lid vfrom the periphery toward the central opening allows of the ready escape of the confined air.

The depending iiange ol of the sliding lid is important. It serves to keep the lid from tilting, insuringits moving in direct line with the walls of the can, and its lower edgeis beveled or sharpened, as seen in Fig. l, to facilitate its removal of the adhering ink on the walls of the can-body as the lid is forced down.

IVhat I claim as new is- 'lhe improved can herein described, consisting of the receptacle, the removable cover, the interior sliding non-reticulated cover having a depending surrounding flange beveled from the inside outermost and tapered from the top of the ange toward the centerof the cover and terminating in a vertical flange c, surrounding the central opening, and a removable stopper for said opening embraced by said vertical flange, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
