L. B. DOUDNA.
GAGE KNIFE.
No. 450,738. Patented Apr. 21, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS B. DOUDNA, or DAYTON, o111o.
GAGE-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,738, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed February 21, 1891. $erial No. 382,279. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS l3. DOUDNA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Faring-Knives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paring-knives, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is attained by the attachment to a suitable knife-blade of a guide so adjustable that the same may be used both in paring and sli ing fruits and vegetables.
I accomplish this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure I is a side view of the device. II is a front or edge view of the same.
Like letters and numerals designate like parts in the two views.
To the steel blade A is attached the usual form of handle B, and the form and construction may correspond to any of the usual forms of domestic knives, with the exception that the diagonal slot 4 must be out near the heel of the blade. The guard C is made of wire,
Fig.
having on its outer end the spiral coil 3, a portion parallel to the edge of the blade, a bend ata right angle, alateral bend at a right angle, and a bend downward over the side of the blade, forming a head to hold the guide within the slot of the blade. The guard is formed of spring-steel and the outer end is held in position by the spiral coil engaging the surfaces of the blade. The rear end of the guard is placed in the slot and the spiral coil is pressed over the sides of the blade until the straight portion is brought to a position parallel with the edge of said blade. To cut a thin paring, the guard is placed near the handle and is moved forward from the same in adapting it for slicing.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a knife-blade provided with a diagonal slot in its heel, the wire guard comprising a part to enter said slot, a straight portion slightly shorter than a blade to which the same may be attached, and a spiral coil adapted to engage the sides of said blade near its point, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS B. DOUDNA.
Witnesses:
B. PICKERING, I F. HERSHEY.
