Description
L. OTT. v HOSE COUPLING.
(No Model.)
No. 450,373. Pate'ntd Apr. 14,1891] NITED STATES ATENT @rrrcn.
LOUIS OTT, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,373, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed February 24, 1891.
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS OTT, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to provide a hose-couplin g whose parts can be easily and quickly connected and disconnected and posi tively locked and held when connected so as to prevent accidental uncoupling; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, which I will now proceed to describe in detail.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an end orifice view of both sections of the coupling; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same uncoupled; Fig. 8, a similar view showing the parts coupled, and Fig. t a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line x 00 of Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A and B represent the two principal members of which the coupling is composed. The member or part A is provided with oppositely-arranged lugs a a, which are adapted to engage with circumferential flanges b 1) upon the member or part B. These flanges b are made slightly tapering or wedge-shaped, and when the parts A B are brought together and turned the lugs Ct ride along the in clined surfaces of the flanges and tend to draw the two parts of the coupling closer together. The outer side of one or both of the flanges b is formed with ratchet-teeth b, and with one series of these ratchet-teeth is adapted to engage a spring-pressed pawl or bolt 0, arranged within a chamber or socket D, formed upon the part A.
As a means for operating the spring ratchet or bolt to disengage it from the ratchet-teeth, as well as a means for rotating the member Serial No. 382,491. (No model.)
her D and prevents the further turning of the handle. For further convenience in manipulating the coupling I may employ a somewhat similar swinging handle F upon the part B.
In the practical working of my invention the two parts A and B are put together and turned until the lugs of the part A have be come engaged with the flanges of part B, and then by means of the handles E F they are further rotated until by the action of the wedge-shaped flanges the end of the part B has been forced against the packingP within the part A as tightly as possible, when the handles are released and permitted to fall parallel to the hose out of the way. The release of the handle E permits the dog or bolt to be projected into the ratchet-tooth standing opposite to it, and thus hold the parts positively locked together.
The disconnection of the coupling is effected even more quickly than their connection, as it is only necessary to raise the handles (which act in itself causes the retraction and disengagement of the spring-pawl) and by means of them turn the parts of the coupling until the lugs of part A become disengaged from the flanges of the part B, whereupon the two parts of the coupling will separate.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the half-coupling having the circumferential flanges wedgeshaped and toothed, as described, of the 00- operating halfcoupling provided with the lugs, the spring-pressed pawl or bolt, and the pivoted handle for retracting the pawl and turning the half-coupling in the coupling and uncoupling operation, substantially as described.
with the handle 9n the first-named nieinbei' operating as a means for turning the halfcoupling, substantially as described.
LOUIS OTT.
2. The combinatiornwith the half-coupling I having the circumferential flanges wedgeshaped and toothed, as described, and having also the pivoted handle, of the (ac-operating 5 half-coupling provided With the lugs, the Witnesses:
spring-pressed pawl, and the swinging handle FREDERICK M. OTT,
i M. W. JACOBS.
for retracting the pawland in connection
