J. WA'NDER. SASH FASTENER.
mi Nomus versus ch, vmru-umm, WAsnmm'oN, n. 0.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WANDER, OF ORANGE VALLEY, NEW JERSEY.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,344, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed November 3, 1890- Serial No. 370,210. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1, JOHN WANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange Valley, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screen Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an ordinary mosquito screen or bar with con venient and effectual means for preventing the said screen from being raised from the outside by improper or unauthorized parties, to secure a simple and inexpensive fastening, and one that will not deface the windowframe when the screen is removed.
The invention consists in the improved window-screen fastening and the arrangements and combinations of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure l is a front elevation of a window-frame having a screen with my improved fastenings. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the same on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 is a section on line no;
and Figs. 3, 4, and 5. are details of a windowframe plate adapted to co-operate With the screen-catch, Figs. 4 and 5 being sections on lines .2 and y, respectively.
In said drawings, Cl, indicates the windowframe; I), the frame of the Window-screen, which lies substantially flush with the said window-frame, and c the catch secured to said screen and engaging a co-operating catch (1 on the window-frame. Of said catch 0 for the screen, e is a plate secured to the screenframe and lying in a plane with the co-operating catch and providing ears f for afulcrumal pin or bar g and a lug h for-holding a spring 01 in position. j is a lever having ears 7.: working on said pin or bar g and held from lateral movement by the ears f. The
handle Z of the lever rests on the spring 2, and is provided with a lug m for holding the end of the spring in position. On the opposite end of the lever the same projects beyond the plate 6, and is provided with a pin or lug n, integrally cast or secured on the under or rear side thereof and adapted to entera hole or recess 0 in the co-operating catch on the window-frame. When the catch 0 is fastened on the screen, the end of the lever opposite the handle projects over and is held by the spring 1' against the casing on which itslides as the screen is raised. Two co-operating catch-plates are preferably employed-one to hold the screen at its lowest limit of movement and another to hold said screen in an elevated position. After removing the catch a from the co-operating catch (1, so as to release the screen, and the latter is moved toward the second co-operating catch, it enters into holding engagement with said second catch automatically, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the frame 00 and screen-frame b, lying flush therewith, of a plate 01 on said frame a, and a catchingrlever fulcrumed on the screen and having an end extending over onto the frame a and adapted to enter into positive holding engagement with the plate (1, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, the plate e, leverj, fulcrumed on said plate and having lug n and a handle at the opposite end, a spring bearing against said handle, and a plate adapted to lie flush with said plate e, having a hole or recess 0 to receive the lug n of the projecting lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of October, 1890.
JOHN WANDER.
