Description

(No Model.)
.L. A. HOWELL. METALLIC CORNER FOR STARS.
No. 450,102. Patented Apr. 7, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYLE A. HOIVELL, OF PULLMAN, ILLINOIS.
METALLIC CORNER FOR STAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,102, dated April '7, 1891.
Application filed september 24, 1890- Serial No. 365,943. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYLE A. HOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pullman, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Corners for Stairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic corners for builders use; and it has for its object to generally improve upon and cheapen theconstruction and render more eflicient in use that class of appliances which are adapted for use upon stairs and in corners of apartments, in which the object sought is to prevent the accumulation of dust and dirt, and thus greatly lessen the amount of labor required in cleaning.
To this end and to such others as the in vention may pertain the same consists in providing a corner-piece of cast metal, having east integral therewith a suitable securing device, as hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a staircorner provided with my improved cornerpiece. Fig.2isarearview ot'thecasting. Fig. 3 is a side and Fig. at a face view of the same.
-Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the corner-piece of casting, which consists of a solid casting of metal, which is provided with a triangularface B and the rear faces 0, D, and
more securely held in place when the nail is thus placed.
The use of the device will be readily understood. In placing itin positionin the corner which is to be protected it is driven securely into the corner. The nail-point enters the wood-work and serves to hold the casting securely in place.
I am aware that sheet-metal triangular cornor-protectors have been proposed, and do not seek to cover such constructions. I form a solid cast block in the form of a pyramid, which will not become indented from driving it into place or bent or battered by anything coming into contact with it, as a sheet-metal one is apt to do. The head of the nail being embedded in the block and out of sight when the block is in place does not mar the appearance, and besides it cannot work out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the corner-block described, of cast metal in the form of a solid block of pyramidal shape with four triangular faces, and an integral nail projecting from the rear of the block at the angle or junction of two of the faces, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LYLE A. HOWELL.
