Description
T. S. BARWIS. I
DRIVING MECHANISM.
' (No Model.)
No. 449,606. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS S. BARXVIS, OF CALGARY, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN LEE BOlVEN, OF SAME PLACE.
DRIVING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent "No. 449,606, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed October 4, 1890. Serial No. 367,046. (No model.) Patented in Canada November 20, 1888, No. 30,235.
T 0 all whom it may concern Beit known that I, THOMAS SHEPPARD BAR- WIs, of Calgary, district of Alberta, NorthlVest Territory, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Driving Mechanism, (for which I obtained Letters Patent in Canada, No. 30,235, dated November 20, 1888,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de: scription.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved mechanism designed for driving different devices, such as churns,
boa-ts, &c., which is simple and durable in construction and very effective in operation.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the driving mechanism is applied to a churn A, consisting of a suitably-constructed frame B, in which is mounted to turn or rock abarrel- C. One trunnion D of the barrel O is provided with a crank-arm E, pivotally connected with one end of a long-armed lever F, pivotally connected with and fulcrumed on one end of a link G, which has its other end pivoted on. a pivot H, held in a bracket I, secured to the frame B of the churn A.
The operator in actuating the mechanism and the device to be driven-in this case the churn Atakes hold of the outer end of the long-armed lever F and moves the same up and down, so that the crank-arm E is caused to turn, the lever swinging with the movement of the crank-arm by the action-of the link G. The turning of the crank-arm causes a turning of the trunnion D, consequently of the barrel 0, containing the milk to be churned into butter.. Instead of imparting a complete turning motion of the crank-arm E, onlya forward-and-backward rocking motion may be given to the same by moving the long-armed lever F in conformity. It will be seen that link Gserves as avibrating support and guide "for the long-armed lever F.
A dead-center position is avoided, as the operator in actuating the lever F not only presses up and down on the same, but can move the same forward and backward, so as to overcome all dead-center positions. By making the leverof a suitable length and applying the power on the outer end very little force is required to actuate the mechanism to be driven. v
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a driving mechanism, the combination, with a crank-arm secured on one of the trunnions of the device to be driven, of a lever pivotally connected with the said crank-arm, a link pivotally connected with the said lever between the crank-arm and its handle end, and a fixed bracket, on which the said link is pivoted, substantially as shown and described.
THOMAS S. BARWIS.
