useful Improvements in Means for Operating -Vibrating Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for operating churns and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient Kapparatus whereby either hand or foot power may be utilized for operating the dasher, the adjusting means being simple and readily accomplished.
' My invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus and Fig. 2 is a detailed view, a portion of the same being shown in section and illustrating the manner in which the dasher is held in place.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates'a standard rising from a plate B. C designates a churn body having a dasher D therein, the upper end of which dasher is mounted in a suitable bearing in the horizontally disposed arm F of said standard. Rising from the base plate B is a post G having a metallic strap H fixed to one side thereof, between which and the post the foot tread K is guided in its vertical movement, said foot tread being pivotally connected at its opposite end to the pin N carried by said standard. Mounted upon the top of the post is a pin O upon which the grooved wheel Q is ournaled and Q/ is a handle provided for the purpose of rocking said wheel upon its pivotal pin O. Said arm F, which is made preferably of a flexible material, is adapted to yield to allow the wheel to be placed over the pivot pin O and serves to retain the same in place p thereon. R designates a rope which winds about the dasher shaft and also passes about the grooved wheel Q and is provided for the purpose of imparting a rotary movement to the dasher when the wheel Q is rocked upon its pivot pin. S designates a pulley journaled upon a pivot S carried by the said standard and T is a rope, one end of which is fastened to the face of the wheel at T, said point of connection of the rope T with the said wheel being` eccentric, whereby, as the rope is pulled upon, a rotary movement may be imparted to the wheelQ. A spring W is fastened at one end to said standard and its othere end to the circumference of said wheel,
the purpose of which spring is to cause the wheel to be returned to its normal position after having been rotated in one direction by pulling upon the rope T. Said tread member is provided with a slot K', one end of which is contracted and is adapted to receive the rope T having knots T2 formed near its free end, which knots are 'adapted to engage the under edge of the tread about the marginal edge of the contracted portion` of the slot to hold the same in an adjusted position.
In operation, when it is desired to actuate the mechanism by hand, the knotted end of the rope is detached from the slot in the tread member and the rope removed from the pulley S and also the spring W is detached from the wheel, thereby leaving the apparatus free to be operated from the swinging leverl Q. Should it be desired to operate the apparatus by tread power, the rope is positioned in the manner shown in Fig. l of the drawings and, by the depression of the tread lever, the wheel will be rotated in one direction and returned to its normal position by means of said spring.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that, by the provision of the device shown and described, a simple and ecient means is afforded for operating the dasher of a churn either by foot or hand power, as may be desired.
