E. B. OWEN.
DOOR KNOB.
No. 448,454. Patented Mar. 17,1891.-
' o recess and taper gradually from end to end,
. NITED STATES Fries.
EDMUND B. OlVEN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEIV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM IV. THOMAS, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-KNOB.
SPEGIFIGATION fQrming part of Letters Patent No. 48A54, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed September 26, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND B. OWEN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Attaching Door-Knobs, of which the follow ing is a specification.
I will describe in detail a door-knob embodyin g my improvement, and then point out the novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of a door-knob embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a face view of a doorknob, certain parts shown in Fig. 1 being removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a certain locking-piece which I employ. Fig. 4 is a central section of the locking-piece shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same,, looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a detail in section of a shank which I employ.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the door-knob, which may be 2 5 of any suitable material and shape. The door-knob is provided about centrally and upon one side with a recess a. This recess has upon opposite sides grooves a, which extend from the outer to the inner end of the or, in other words, the grooves are deeper at their inner ends than at their outer ends.
13 designates a locking-piece. This locking-piece is preferably made of metal and is 3 5 provided upon opposite sides with external wings 7). These wings conform substantially in shape to the grooves ct in the knob. The locking-piece is, however, of less diameter than is the recess a, and is provided with an 40 opening b therein larger than the door-spindle hereinafter described, whereby a considerable range of adjustment for spindles of different lengths is obtained.
0 designates a shank, which shank, as shown, consists of a 'metal cylinder 0, in which is secureda bushing 0', having formed in it a rectangular opening adapted to re ceive a spindle D. Eucirclin g the metal cylinder c is a collar E.
In assembling the parts the l0cking-piece Serial No. 325,186. (No model.)
Bis placed within the recess a. The'metal cylinder 0 is then passed into the recess a, but outside of the locking-piece B. It is then, by a blow or otherwise, driven inwardly, when the wings I) operate to expand the metal cyl in der into the grooves a. When thus expanded, the cylinder cannot be withdrawn and the shank and knob are firmly secured together. \Vhen thus driven in, the collar E rests against the side of the knob A and ef- 6c fectually closes the outer end of the recess a.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a knob provided upon one side with a recess having grooves, as a, of a locking-piece arranged in said recess, provided with wings extending into said grooves, and a shank comprising a metallic cylinder adapted to be forced into said recess and spread into said grooves by the wings of the locking-piece, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a door-knob having a dovetailed or inwardly-enlarged recess, of a tubular shank having a substantially straight and uniform bore and at one end adapted to snugly fit said recess, and a central expander made separate from the knob and consisting of a tapering plug larger in its greatest diameter than the internal diameter of the shank and having ahole formed there- So in larger than the door -spindle, whereby when the expander is placed in the knob-recess and has the end of the shank forced inward over it it forces said end in all directions against the wall of the recess, and when all the parts are secured together a considerable range of adjustment for spindles of different lengths is obtained.
3. The combinatiomwith a door-knob having a dovetailed or inwardly-enlarged recess, of a C tubular shank havingasubstantially straight and uniform bore and at one end adapted to snugly fit said recess, and a central expander made separate from the knob and consisting of a tapering plug larger in its greatest diameter than the internal diameter of the shank and provided with one or more projecting parts upon its surface, whereby when the expander is placed in the knob-recess it is prevented from turning therein, and when [00 it has the end of the shank forced inward over it it forces said end in all directions against the walls of the recess.
4:. The combination, with a door-knob having a dovetailed or inwardly-enlarged recess and one or more depressions in the walls of the recess, of a tubular shank having a substantially straight and uniform bore and at one end adapted to snugly fit said recess, and a central expander made separate from the knob and consisting of a tapering plug larger in its greatest diameter than the internal diameter of the shank and provided with one or more projecting parts upon its surface adapted to fit in one or more of the depressions in the walls of the recess in the knob.
5. The combination, with a door-knob having a dovetailed or inwardly-enlarged recess, 4
of a tubular shank having a substantially straight and uniform bore and at one end adapted to fit said recess and a central expander made separate from the knob and consisting of atapering plug larger inits greatest diameter than the internal diameter of the shank and provided with one or more projecting parts upon its side surface, whereby when the expander is placed in the knob-recess and has the end of the shank forced inward over it it forces said end in all directions against the wall of the recess and the projections on the side surface engage with said end of the tubular shank.
