JAMES H. JORDAN AND JAMES M. COOK, OF MOUNTAIN HOME, ARKANSAS.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,433, dated March 17, 1891. Application filed November 4, 1890. Serial No. 370,314= (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES H. JORDAN and JAMES M. COOK, citizens of the United States, residing at Mountain Home, in the county of Baxter and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Tongue-Support, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in tongue-supports.
The object of the present, invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive tongue support which wilinot interfere with driving nor strike against the legs of horses and cause the annoyance com mon to this class of devices.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tongue and the front portion of a running-gear provided with a tongue-support constructed in accordance witn'this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a vehicle-tongue pivoted in the usual manner between the front hounds 2, which are secured to the front axle 3, between the same and the head-block 4. lhe tongue is provided with the hook 5, which is engaged by a yoke or U-shaped piece (3, provided at its ends with eyes which are attached to springs 7 and have their rear ends secured to chains 8, the links of which engage hooks 9, arranged on the frontface of thebolster 10,whereby the tongue is supported and strains taken from the necks of the animals, and the chains 8 may be readily adjusted and made shorter by engaging their links with the hook 9. The
reach 11 of the running-gear is pivoted in the usual manner between thehead-block and the front axle, and is provided with a hook 12 to that secured to the tongue, and the said hook 12 is engaged by the rear ends of chains 13, extending to the bolster and engaging hooks 14, arranged on the rear face of the bolster. By this construction the strain on the part is equalized and the bolster is not swung forward by the weight of the tongue.
It Will be seen that the running-gear is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is adapted to be readily applied to the ordinary construction, and by arranging the spring as shown the tongue-support does not interfere with the guiding of the vehicle, and i is prevented striking against the horses legs.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
What we claim is The co1nbination,with the front axle, the hounds, the bolster provided on its front and rear faces with hooks arranged on opposite sides the pivotal point, of the tongue pivoted between the hounds and provided on its upper face with the hook 5, the reach havinga similar hook 12, the chains 13, having their rear ends engaging the hook 12 of the reach and their front ends engaging the bolster-hooks, the yoke engaging the hook 5 of the tongue and provided with eyes, the springs secured to the eyes, and the chains 8, having their front ends attached to the springs and their rear ends engaging the hooks, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
