YVALTER EDWARDS WARNER, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
DENTAL-SERVICESTAND.
SIECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,100, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed March 8, 1890. Serial No. 343,122. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER EDwARDs XVARNER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dental-Service Stand, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descript-ion.
My invention is an improvement in the class of dental stands which are provided with a spittoon attached to a service or waste pipe; and the improvement consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is mainly a central vertical section through the device, a portion of the same being in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation and section of the branch or movable waste-pipe and a vertical section through the adjusting-plug used in connection therewith. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line so a: of Fig. 2, the plug being illustrated in a position to be slipped upon the service-pipe. V
In carrying out the invention the wastepipe 10 is carried upward some distance above the floor and is provided at its upper end with an attached outwardly and upwardly flaring socket 11, having a ground inner surface. Into the upper end of the waste-pipe the end of the vertical member of a curved or essentially L-shaped branch pipe 12 is introduced, the said end of the branch being reduced in external diameter at its extremity and provided with a gasket or packing 13, of any approved material, engaging with the inner surface of the main waste-pipe 10, thereby forming a water and gas tight connection. The vertical member of the branch wastepipe 12 has produced upon opposite faces a series of vertically-aligning lugs 14:, as best shown in Fig. 2.
Upon the branch pipe 12 a disk-like plug 16 .is slid, shaped with ground beveled sides and adapted to fit in the socket 11 and form a ground swing-joint between the main wastepipe and its branch. The plug 16 is fitted with a bore of sufficient diameter to take the vertical member of the branch pipe 12,
and also with interior perpendicular grooves .15 to clear the lugs 14 of the branch pipe, and
with circumferential grooves forming ribs 17, adapted to pass between the lugs of the branch pipe,'as shown in Fig. 3. The plug is placed upon the branch 12 by causing the lugs 14 of the branch to enter the perpendicular grooves or channels 15 of the plug, and the horizontal member of the branch wastepipe may be held at more or less elevation above the main waste-pipe by turning the plug and causing the ribs 17 to pass under and in contact with the upper or the lower branch lugs 14, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Upon the extreme end of the horizontal member of the Waste branch pipe 12 a globetrap 18 is secured, having a plug screwed in its under side and provided with an opening in its top of suflicient diameter only to receive the tubular shank 19 of a cup or spittoon 20, communication bein established between the bottom of the globe-trap and the spittoon through said shank.
It is obvious from the foregoing description that by the manipulation of the plug 16 the spittoon may be raised or lowered, as it is carried by the waste branch pipe 12, and that as said branch may be turned freely in the main waste-pipe the spittoon may be readily moved horizontally in a circle.
Through the lower portion of the main waste-pipe 10 the service-pipe 21 is entered, which service-pipe is carried upward through the main waste-pipe and the vertical member of the branch 12 and out through a suitable stufiing-box 22, formed upon the latter. The upper portion of the service-pipe has attached thereto a faucet 23, preferably of the gooseneek pattern, and below said faucet, a glass- ICO 3% into the basin or spittoon a gentle suction is created in the branch tube 35, whereby the latter may be employed with good results to siphon saliva from the patients mouth. The drinking-glass is supported in the ring-like body of the holder.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a stand for dental use, the combination,
with the vertical Waste-pipe 10 and the detachable bored plug 16, supported therein and having internal grooves and ribs, of the laterally-extended pipe 12, carrying a spittoon, and the spray 29, located within it, all as 15 shown and described.
WALTER EDXVARDS VARNER.
