FEEDING APPARATUS FOR USE IN BURNING CLAY.

Be itknown that We, HENRY G. BUTLER and lWILLIAM BUTLER, citizens of the United to claim our presentrimprovement for anyl purpose to which it may be applicable we have especially designed itfor use as alaborsaving machine in burning` clay to make ballast according` to the United States Patents Nos. 305,432 and 371,042 to iVilliam Davy and our own Letters Patent No. 413,358. A general description of the manner of procedure observed under the said Letters Patent for burning clay, and in the practice of which we use feeding apparatus,-may be here briefly stated to enable the more ready understanding of the manner of employing` our present improvement. The clay is burned in the open air and on the ground from which the supply is taken, being dug from a trench (formed by the removal of the supply of clay) and piled alongr one side thereof to, form the re, which is of long extent, and which is replenished withv alternate layers of fuel and clay, the latter being supplied by a feeding apparatus, a general description of which as hitherto employed, and as shown and described in the aforesaid Letters Patent No. 413,361, is as follows: Along the side of the trench or line from which the clay for burning is dug and opposite the side thereof alongwhich the fire extends a railroad is provided for a car supporting the feeding apparatus and means for actuating an d controlling it, the feeding mechanism involving a boom ext-ending laterally from the car over the work or fire and a scoop orscrapersupported on and controlled through the medium of cables from winding mechanism inside the car to till itself with clay by scooping it along the side of the trench adja` cent to the track and carry itout toward and dump it upon the fire.
Our present improvement relates particularly to the means for supporting and controlling the scoop or scraper, and which are illustrated .in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly sectional, showing the feeding apparatus provided with our improvement; and Fig. 2, a section taken on the line 2 of Fig. l and viewed in the direction ofthe arrow. l
A is the support, preferably in the form of a car movable on a track extending along one side of the lire, the car carrying on its roof the frame-work or mast7 B, and from the base of which extends laterally of the car the boom C, and D is the scraper or scoop. These parts may involve the construction set forth in the last-named Letters Patent or in the application of Henry G. Butler, Seria-l No. 362,735, filed August 22, 1890, and need not, therefore, be more definitely described in the present connection, or they may involve any other suitable construction. The boom C may, however, be especially adapted for the travel upon it of the scoop-carrying carriage E, and to that end should have the two sides r and r forming it constitute a track upon which the carriage is supported.
The carriage E may be a four-wheeled vehicle, as shown, on a suitable truck p, from which is suspended a pulley q on a rod 0. From the pulley q is suspended the scoop or scraper D by a cable a led inside the car A over a guide-pulley n and there fastened to an operating-drum m. The drum Zdnside the car controls the scooping operation of the device D bybeing connected with the latter at its forward end through the medium of the cable k, while the cablet connects the carriage from its forward end with the drum 7L inside the car, passing thereto over the pulley g at the end of the boom and over the pulleyfat the top of the mast or frame B. The power mechanism inside the car may be that shown and described in the aforesaid formerly-patented apparatus, and need not, therefore, be shown and described in the present application.
The operation is as follows: The cable n IOO should be so adj usted as to its length by winding it upon or l'roin the (1li-ultimas to cause it to allow the scraper D to enter the trench te the desired depth for loading itself with the clay and perinit it to be extended to the desired point for dumping on the fire. The filling is accomplished in the old inanner-nainely, by turning the druin l to pull the scoop D in the proper direction when it has been lowered into the trench. Vvihen filled, the drum 71, is t-urned to wind upon it the cable if, thereby drawing the carriage E en its track toward the outer end of the boom C, and thus to the point over the tire at which to dump it. As the carriage proceeds on its outward course it carries with it the laden scoop er scraper l), which, bythe consequentlength` ening out in the direction of travel of the carriage, conveys the scoop or scraper up an inclined plane to the point of dumping. After the scraper has been dumped it is returned and lowered to be again filled by mow ing under the influence of the gravity of the carriage E down the inclined track into the trench, assuming the position in which it` is illustrated in the drawings.
Obviously asuitable track for thecarriage may be formed, as shown and described, by the boom itself', or may be attached to the boom.
.3y doubling the cable fn, as indicated in Fig. 1, the vertical rise of the scraper maybe regulated to any desired proportion of the movement thereof toward the tire.

In an apparatus substantially for the purpose set forth, the combination of a ear A, provided with winding-drums Lm, and 7i, and carrying on its roof the maststructure B, a booin C, extending from the ear and provided with a track rising toward the outer end of the boom, a carriage E on the track, eonnected from its forward end by a cable with the druin 7i, and provided with a suspensionrod 0, carrying a pulley q, a scoop or scraper D, suspended from the pulley q by a cable n, connected with the drum m, and a cable la, connecting` the device D from its forward end with the drain Z, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
