A. HOE N. CIGARETTE BOX.
Patented Feb. 24
'FIG III.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST A. IIoEN, or RIo IMoNI), VIRGINIA;
CIGARETTE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,183, dated February 24, 1891.
Application filed January 27,1890. Serial No. 338,267. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. HOEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This improvement relates to a class of pasteboard boxes, which exist under various modifications, made from a single piece of material properly shaped and folded, and is an improvement on Letters Patent No. 414,538, granted November 5, 1889, to myself.
The object of the present invention is to produce a box in which cigarettes may be more readily packed and withdrawn for use and to reduce the cost in the manufacture of such box.
My improved box is made of a single piece or thickness of material with the bottom, ends, and'lower two-thirds, or thereabout, of the sides permanently united, and the upper parts of the two sides, though integral with the permanentlower parts, are separated from the ends and form inclosing covers provided with flaps projecting at right angles, which overlap to form the top of the'box. The permanent ends are made to extend up even with the flaps in their overlapping position, and the covers are adapted to retain their normal closed position by the elasticity of the material.
In order that my invention may be more fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed, showing in dotted lines the creases on which it is to be folded. Fig. 11 is a perspective view of the open box.
Fig. III is a vertical longitudinal section of movable portions of the sides and forming the top of the box.
5 5 are the flaps made to form the bottom when overlapped and secured together, and 6 6 are tabs which are integral with the ends of the box and underlie the bottom when the ends are bent at right angles to the ends.
7 represents cuts made for the purpose of separating the moving portions 3.
The blank being formed as above described,
it will be observed that the ends are exactly the same in construction with the exception of the removal of the tabs 6 from the end at which the cuts? are made to form the movable covers. It will therefore be'seen that the construction is not only simple, but either end of the blank may be used in manufacturing.
To complete the box from the above-described blank the parts are folded on the creases (represented by dotted lines) to form right angles, the end-forming flaps 2 being pasted together, as also are the bottom-forming flaps 5 and the bracing-tabs 6 to form the bottom. The movable covers may be creased on the lines 8, so as to form a hinge, or this crease may be omitted, so that the inclosing covers will spring in place when released.
From the construction of the box set forth it will be observed that while the vertical ends '2 2 extend up to support the cigarettes the inclosing covers 3 and their flaps 4 may be separated, so that the fingers maybe inserted on opposite sides of the cigarettes, so that they may be more readily withdrawn. This freely-opening end or removable feature of the end is of greatest advantage in filling the boxes with cigarettes.
Having thus described my invention,- the following is What I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The herein-described blank for cigarette described, having the bottom, ends, and a portion of the sides permanently secured together and the movable corresponding similarlyforlned springeovers 3, provided with overlapping flaps t and carried by the said sides 1., substantially as and for the purposes setforth.
3. A cigarette-box, substantially as herein described, having the pair of movable inclos ing covers 3,0onneeted to the sides and form- IO ing the top and a portion of the sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ERNEST A. IIOEN.
