IMPROVED BUCKET FOR PRESERVING BUTTER, FRUIT, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,626, dated October 11, 1864.
city and count-y of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckets for Preserving Butter and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, and made to form apart of this specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a convenient and cheap bucket for family use, which may at the same time be adapted to use as a package for the preservation of butt-er, fruits, &c. and the nature of the invention relates to the peculiar construction of the bucket as a new article of manufacture and trade, as hereinafter set forth and represented.
In reference to the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved bucket as complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of p the bucket without the lid, showing the conformation of the top thereof, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the center of the lid.
A represents the body of the bucket, which may be of suitable metal tin being preferred, the top being stiffened and strengthened by means of an annular wire as is usual in tin vessels. At a point near the top of the bucket will be formed an annular projection or shoulder, extending inwardly, as seen in "Fig. 2, and the lid B will be made with a flange, 0, (seen in Fig. 3,) which is adapted to fit nicely within the top of the bucket and upon the said shoulder. A small annular groove is thereby afforded between the plane of the lid and the upper edge of the body of the bucket, as d, Fig. 1, which, when the bucket may be employed for preserving butter or other articles, may be filled with suitable cement. The lid B will be made with an aperture that may be closed with a screw-cap, f, and this cap may be depressed in the construction of the lid, so
that it may not extend above the plane of the top of the bucket, in order to preserve the package from injury by the placing of other articles therein, and to faeilitatepacking for transportation. The screw-cap f is intended to close the opening in the lid perfectly ail;- tight, so that no cement may be required around it to insure the preservation of the contents of the bucket.
hen used for fruit, after the articles may be placed therein the bucket will be sealed, as before described, by means of a suitable composition, cold cement being preferred. The package will then be partially immersed in boiling water until the air may be expelled from the interior thereof. The cap f will then be secured upon the lid and the sealed package is complete.
\Vhen the contents of the package is butter, l
the lid may be sealed as before described. .Then melted butter or other suitable fluid may be poured through the opening in the lid until the paekage is completely filled, so as tov exclude the air, when the cap f may be secured, as before described.
Vhenever it may be desired to examine the contained butter, a suitable instrument may be inserted through the opening in the lid for the purpose, without unsealing the lid or exposing the contents of the bucket to material injury.
