SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,144, dated February 10, 1891.

Beit known that I, JUNI SOHRIB, a citizen of the United States, residing at McGregor, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have inventedcertainnewand usefulImprovements in XVaShing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, and to theletters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has relation to that class of washing-machines in which are employed an automatically sliding or gravitating rubbing-head adapted to be rotated within the suds-box and provided with means for changing the inclination of suds-box for the purpose of regulating the pressure of the rubbing-head against the clothes.

The above-mentioned construction is shown and described in my former patent dated September 27, 1887, No. 370,418, and the present invention' is designed as an improvement thereon, whereby the means for adjusting and regulating the inclination or angle of the suds-box is materially improved.

The invention therefore consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the suds-boX having upon itsinner side a corrugated rubbing-surface, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, and at or near its bottom has a faucet a for drawing off the dirty water.

Within the suds-boX is located the corrugated rubbing-head B, the shaft b of which is supported in a Babbitt-metal bearing c, said shaft having a suit-able crank-handle C for rotating the rubbing-head.

S0 far as described the construction is the same as shown and described in my former patent above referred to, and in which the inclination was given tothe suds-boX by means of short supplemental legs adj ustably connected to the lower ends of the two rear legs of the machine.

lprovide other and much better means tha what is shown in my former patent for regulatin g the inclination of the suds-box, which are considered more practical and serviceable and in every way better adapted to washingmachines.

In describing my improvement I provide, in the iirst place, what I term a brace d, which is securely attached to therear side of the suds-box, and immediately below this brace is a second brace e, extending parallel therewith and connected to a brace f upon the front of the suds-box by means of rods g, which are headed at one end and screwthreaded at the other to receive screw-nuts h, whereby the two clamps e f can be tightened up against the sides of the suds-box. The braces d have flaring mortises t', in which are seated the upper ends of legs D, said legs passing down through guides 7c, which are secured to the brace d, as shown. the legs D have elongated slots Z, through which pass set or thumb screws m, for holding the legs stationary after the legs have been p vertically adjusted.

I do not desire to limit myself to the precise means shown to hold the legs in their vertically-adjusted position, as other and Wellknown means may be vemployed without departing from the principle of my invention.

In the present instance the thumb-screws m have a suitable washer orare headed upon their inner ends to bear against the inner sides of the legs and press them against the guides k, or, as previously stated, any Well-known means maybe employed to attain the same end.

To the inner sides of the legs D are pivotally connected brace-rods E, the free ends of which engage with a bracket fn, which serves thereto by athumb-screw o or by any other preferred means. Now it will be seen by the construction above described that the legs D are capable of adjustment in two directions-Viz., a vertical adjustment and a lateral adjustment, thus not only providing for the adjustment of the angle of which the suds-box is to assume, but to spread the legs at the rear side of the suds-boX to make a firmer support therefor.

I find it more practical to have the legs at the back of the machine than the legs secured The upper ends ofv as a guide for the rods and are firmly held IOO essential when the legs D are in use; but if additional support for thc suds-box is t'ound necessary they may be used, if so desired.

The legs Gr, if preferred, may be rendered adjustablein any suitable manner, but preferably by the elongated slots s and set or thumb screws t, this being considered the most simple.

The cover I-I is made deep enough so that when it is removed from the suds-box it can be used for a tub or for any other purpose found desirable.

The rods g pass through elongated slots U in both ythe legs F G, to admit of the proper adjustment of the legs without interfering with said rods, the latter also servi ng as braces for the legs.

In Fig. 2 of the drawingsI have shown only the legs D G, the legs F being removed and not at all times deemed necessary.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. In a washing-machine, a suds-box provided with an automatically sliding or gravitating rubbing-head adapted to vbe rotated Within the box, in combination with the legs for supporting the box, one pair of said legs having both a vertical and lateral adjustment, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a Washing-machine,a suds-box provided with an automatically sliding Orgravitating rubbing-head adapted to be rotated Within the suds-boX, in combination with the legs for supporting said box, one pair of said legs having elongated slots at their upper ends, thumbfscrews and guides for holding them in their vertically-adj usted position, and horizontal brace-rods engaging With a bracket and held thereto by thumb-screw to retain the legs in their lateral adjustment, said rods being connected to the legs, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
