UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. CASSELMAN AND ELISHA II. FLETCHER, CF EVENING SHADE,
ARKANSAS.
FLOOD-FENCE..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,111, dated February 10, 1891. v
Application filed October 14, 1890. Serial No. 368,116. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL E. CAssEL- MAN and ELIsIIA H. FLETCHER, citizens of the United States, residing at Evening Shade, vin the county of Sharp and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flood-Fences; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exl Our invention is described as follows: IVesecurea cross-tie A on a number of stringers a. In the downstream edge of the cross-tie A are recesses a', in each of which is set a coil-spring a2, (so low that when the comb is bent down said springs will be under said comb,) one end of which spring is attached to a downstream-brace a3, and the other end is secured to the comb B, which is pivoted in the arms b, which in turn are attached to the cross-tie A.
Comb B is provided with a number of perpendicular teeth b', the front or upstream edges of which are beveled (see Figs. l and 3) to offer as little resistance to the water as possible.
C are upstream-braces, the lower ends of which are slightly notched and attached to the cross-tie, as shown in Fig. 2, and so that their upper edges will be ush with the side of the comb when the same is pressed down by the stream, and being attached in this manner they protect the backbone of the comb B from dbris and the like that may happen to be coming down the stream.
At the free ends of braces C, braces as, and stringers a are provided perforations through which are driven stakes cc in the manner as shown; also, to increase the tirinness of this fence rock or other analogous substance may be placed under the braces C and a3 and over the stringers a.
Our invention operates as follows: It is placed in the bed of a stream and secured as described. When the water is at its ordinary height, the comb will remain in an upright position; but when the Water rises the comb will bend down under the weight of any dbris that is in the stream and it Will pass over it without injury to said comb. NVhen 'the Water falls, the springs a will raise the comb B back into an upright position. p
Having described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure byLetteIs Patent, is- ,l
1. A Hood-fence consisting of the cross-tie A, having the recesses c', the comb B, pivoted on the top of said cross-tie, springs a2, seated in said recesses, as shown, and holding said comb in an upright position, stringers a and braces a3, holdingsaid cross-tie in place, and Y upstream-braces C, secured to said cross-tie and having their upper edges flush With the side of the comb when the same is pressed down, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
The combination of the stringers a, crosstie A, secured vto said stringers and having 'the end recesses d downstream-braces a3 secured to said cross-tie, coil-springs a2, seated in said recess, as shown, arms b, secured to each end ot' said cross-tie, comb B, pivoted in said arms and having the front edges of its teeth beveled, upstream-braces C, secured to said cross-tie so that their upper edgesare flush with the side of said comb When the same is pressed down, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth. In testimony whereof We allix oursignatures in presence ot' two witnesses.
DANIEL E. CASSELMAN. ELISI-IA H. FLETCHER.
