To all whom, it' may concern.-

Be it known that I, MICHAEL DAILY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing 'lool-l-Iandles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makc and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for detachably-secnring hammers and other like tools to their handles; and it has for its object to generally improve upon this class of devices and to provide a simple and inexpensive means whereby the hammer-head may be securely locked in position upon the handle, and may be as readily removed, thus permitting the handle to be used with various sizes of heads, which maybe readily changed as desired. I

To this end and lo such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement and adaptation of parts, which will hereinafter be more ,fully described, shown in the accompanying' drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective View of a hammer-head attached to the handle in accordance with my invention. l Fig, 2 is a like View of the end of the handle, showing the wedgeshaped opening for the reception of the retaining-wedge. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the retaining wedge upon an enlarged scale, and Fig. a is a like View of the locking pin or key.

l Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the handle of Va hammer or other like tool. The end of the handle upon which it is proposed to secure the hammer-head B is of such size and form as to permit of its ready insertion within the eye of th e hamm er-head. A wed ge-shaped aperture C is provided within the end of the handle, within which is seated the retaining wedge D, said wedge being constructed of metal and provided at its upper end with the horizontal extensions d, which extensions, when the wedge is in place, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, overlap the upper face of the hammer-head. The locking pin or key E is passed transversely through the handle and through the elongated opening d2 in the retaining-wedge D. It will be observed that the shape of the opening d2 and that of the locking pin or key E are such as to cause the wedge D to be drawn down securely within the handle when the pin is inserted.

The pin E is provided with a rounded head e, one side of which is cut away slightly upon the under face of the head, as shown at e', and when ii is desired to remove the pin it may be readily done by inserting the point of a suitable tool in said recess e.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the hammer-head, the handle provided with a wedge-shaped aperture in its end, the retaining-wedge provided at one of its ends with lateral extensions adapted when the wedge is inserted in the handle to engage the upper face of the hammer-head, and at a point near its opposite end having an oblong aperture, as described, ot a locking pin or key having a body portion lcorresponding in size and form with the opening in the wedge, said pin or key being adaptedto be passed through the handle and opening in the wedge, and having its end provided with a recess c', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
