Description

(No Model.)
B; P. FIELD. -BO0'K HOLDER.
No; 445,885. Patented Feb: 8,1891.
I Bergman/(5L2 ammm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN P. FIELD, OF BABYLON, NEIV YORK.
BOOK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming paint of Letters Patent No. 445,885, dated February 3, 1891. Application filed September 30, 1890. Serial No. 366,699. (N0 model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. FIELD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Babylon, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in book-holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and elfective device which can be readily attached and detached from a book or folio to prevent the leaves thereof turning; and itconsists in a book-holder for the above purpose made up of a spring hook or niemher, to which are pivotally secured two swinging arms adapted to contact with the leaves, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved book-holder; Fig. 2, a view showing the same applied to a book.
A refers to the hook portion, which is preferably made up of spring metal, and bent, as
shown, so as to provide a long back member a and a comparatively short front member a, the ends of both being bent slightly outward. To the shortmember a is pivot-ally secured, by means of a rivet Z), arms B, which are slightly curved, the ends being turned out ward. The under arm is slightly recessed for the reception of the head of the rivet, and the rivet is tightened sufficiently to provide frictional contact between the parts to hold them in any position they may be placed.
The device hereinbefore described is extremely simple in construction and effective in use, and maybe used for holding extended folios of music, hymnals, and music-books, and also for holding sheets of music not only open but to a music-rack.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bookholder or device for holding the leaves of a book 0pen,the combination of a hook made up of a single piece of flat spring metal having sides which are substantially parallel with each other, the ends of said hook being curved so as to project away from each other, one of said hooks being longer than the other, the shorter member having arms B B pivotally attached thereto, so that said arms can be swung horizontally on the pivot, so as to lie at right angles with the spring-hook, substantially as shown, and i for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a book holder for the purpose set fort-h, consisting of a spring-clasp A, made of a single piece of flat metal, and arms B, secured thereto by a single pivot, substantially as set forth.
3. A book-holder consisting of a springclasp made up of a single piece of metal, bent as shown, the ends being curved in opposite directions, arms 13, pivotally secured to the front member of the spring-clasp above and below the same by a rivet, the ends of said arms being bent at their outer ends, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN P. FIELD.
