Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE,
MORRIS BOTTIOEEE, OE WASHINGTON, DISTIOT OE COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOE To EIOHAED EURE AND MAx HAARBUEGEE.
IMPROVED PACKING FOR STUFFING-BOXES OF STEAM AND OTHER ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,575, dated October 4, 1864.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS BOTIIOIIER, of Washington city, District of Columbia, have invented and discovered a new mode of Packing Stuffing-Boxes of Engines 5 and l do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe it as follows:
Figure l represents a sectional view of a common stuffing-box and piston; Fig. 2, an end View ofthe saine.
A represents the cylinders of a common stuffing-box; B, a piston or valve-stem; C, the chamber containing the packing.
'lhe nature and object of my invention consists in the use of soapstone and asbestus mixed together With cotton, to compose a cheap and lasting packing.
I pulverize the soapstone and asbestus,
and I mix one tenth quantity of asbestos with nine-tenths of the soapstone. I then mix the tlour with cotton, and put a layer around the piston-rod or valvestem. I var my layers according to the thickness of the rod, and when the box is once lled and tight the packing will remain so for several months, and requires no lubricating with oils, 8vo.
This packing does not become heated r damaged by friction; hence its economy is of much advantage over the ordinary packing, that requires frequent repairing and constant lubrication With oils, fat, 85o.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The Inode and manner of packing stuffingboxes With cotton, pulverlzed asbestos, and soapstone, as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
MURE IS BOTTIGHER.
