ROD-PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,031, dated October 17, 1882.
Application filed March 11, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM HAAS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod-Packing, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved packing for steam-valves and stufl'- ing-boxes; and the irtvention consists of a packing made of small shot of a suitable antil'riction metal, said shot filling the space around the stem of the valve or piston-rod of the stuffing-box, and being retained at one or both sides by an asbestus or other packingring.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and. 2 represent vertical central sections of a valve and of a stuffing-box with my improved packing".

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with asteam-"alve or stuffing-box and a valve-stem or piston rod,of a packing of fine shot placed in a cavity of the valveorstufting-boxaroundthevalve-spindleor piston-rod, and retained by a pack ing-ring'and tightening-sleeve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
