UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT F. ALLEiT AND DANIEL N. GlBllS, OF GRAFTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,529, dated February 3, 1891.
Application filed March 31, 1890l To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that we, HERBERT F. ALLEN and DANIEL N. GIBBS, both citizens of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Torcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather Boots; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXaet description thereof, which, in connection with the drawings making a part of this speciiieation,'will enable others skilled in the art to which our invention belongs to inake and use the same.
Our invention relates to leather boots, and more particularly to leather water-proof boots, or boots provided with an interlnin g of water-proof material.
The object of our invention is to improve upon the construction of leather boots as ordinarily constructed provided with a waterproof interlining; and our invention consists in certain novel features of construction of a will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of our improved leather boot, shown broken away at the back portion. Fig. 2 is, on an enlarged scale, a detail of a section of the back of the boot.
In the accompanying drawings, lis the front section of a leather boot, and 2 the back section. Said sections are united by side seams 3 in the ordinary way.
The back section 2 of the boot, to which our invention particularly relates, consists of the single piece of leather 2, extending from the top of the boot to the heel thereof, and a second piece of leather 4, extending within the piece 2 and secured thereto at its upper edge by stitches 5, extending around the entire width of the piece 2.
To the lower edge of the piece 4 is secu red by stitches 7 the counter 6. The piece 4: and counter 6, stitched to its lower edge, form the lining of the rear half of the boot for about one-half or two-thirds of its height, as shown in Fig. l. The counter 6 is supported and Serial No. 346,103. (No model.)
held in place by being stitched at its upper edge to the lower. edge of the piece t, and said counter is not attached to or connected di rectly with the outside piece 2 of the boot by a row of stitches uniting the upper edge of the counter to the outside of the boot at the heel portion thereof, as is ordinarily the case.
Between the outside 2 of the boot and the piece -t and counter G, forming the lining, is interposed a piece S of water-proof material, preferably rubber, which is cemented to the piece 2 and lining l and 6 and extends from the heel to the upper edge of the lining et, as shown in the drawings.
From the above description, in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that we make a leather-top boot in which the counter at the heel portion of the boot is attached to the lower edge of the lining of the leg of the boot in the rear half of the boot independent of the outside thereof; and, further, that we combine with said lining and counter and the outside of the boot a water-proof material eXn tending between the two.
XVe are aware that prior to our invention water-proof interlinings have been used in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and wetherefore do not broadly claim the same as our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a leather boot, the combination, with the rear section 2 and the lining et, stitched at its upper edge to the section 2, and the counter 6, stitched to the lower edge of the lining 4: independent of the section 2, of the interlining 8, of water-proof material, extending; between the section 2 and the lining et and counter 6 and cemented thereto, substantially as set forth.
HERBERT F. ALLEN. DANIEL N. GIBBS.
