D. WAGNER. NEWSPAPER HOLDER.
Patented Jan. 27,1891.
1 TE EVENING STAR I111] entai llnial bfzl ner UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE.
DANIEL IVAGNER, OF UNITY, OHIO.
NEWSPAPERBHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,435, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed September 20,1890. Serial No. 365,664. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Le it known that I, DANIEL \VAG-NER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Unity, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Newspaper- Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to a new and improved holder for newspapers, having for its object the production of a cheap, simple, and efficient device forholdinga newspaper while the same is being read or perused, the columns of each page of the paper being presented in their order, substantially as hereinafter fully setforth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View showing my invention as employed in practice. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional v view thereof. Fig. 3 is a View indicating a paper rolled on the holder.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the holder, which consists of two jaws or members ct a, pivotally secu red or hinged together at a whereby they can be opened lengthwise. The lower ends of the jaws or members are slightly curved or rounded to form a handle a B is a screw located in a threaded aperture of jaw or section a, and its lower end is de signed to enter and engage a coincident threaded hole or aperture bin the jaw or member a. These jaws or members are made of sufficient length to permit of the insertion lengthwise of a newspaper between the hinge a and the holding-screw B, as shown in Fig. 1.
In practice a newspaper is first inserted i between the jaws in the manner shown in Fig. 1, and is firmly held or bound by tightening screw B. As the reader peruses the firstcolumn of the first page he turns the holder so as to present the next column, and so on in reading each column until the paper is entirely wound on the holder. Then in perusing consecutively the columns of the second page the paper is unwound from the holder, upon which it is again wound in reading the third page and unwound in perusing the fourth page, and so on according to the number of sheets of paper.
The advantages of my invention are obvious. It will be especially observed that in addition to being a greatassistance in perusing or examining a newspaper, it also serves as a preserver for the paper, keeping it in place. \Vhen not in use, it can be hung up out of the way by the eyelet of the screw B.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein-described holder for news papers, having two jaws or members pivotally connected together at their ends and designed to receive and hold a newspaper lengthwise, as set forth.
2. The herein-described holders for newspapers, consisting of two jaws or members, a hinge connecting said jaws or members at their upper ends, and a screw working in a hole or aperture of one of said jaws or mem-' bers and designed to engage a coincident hole or aperture of the other jaw or mem her, as set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described newspaper-holder, consisting of the two jaws or members pivotally connected together and having lower curved or rounded handle ends, and an eye-screw for binding said jaws or members together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL lVAG-NER.
