Beit known that we, EUGENE D. ODELL and ABIJAH JONES, citizens of the United States, residing at Darien, in the county of \Valworth and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVhip- Sockets and Line-Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention relates to an automatic whipsocket.; and its object is to provide a whipsocket so arranged and constructed that it is inexpensive, very practical and effectual in operation, and provides a rein-holder into which the lines can be readily adjusted and easily removed. le attain this object by a certain construction and arrangement of parts, fully described in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,in which- Figurc l is a side View of the whipsocket. Figs. 2, 3, and a are detail views of parts to which reference will be hereinafter made.
A, Il, and C designate the parts of which the whip-socket is composed. The parts A and B are constructed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, with the inner side semicircular and ilarin g at the top, so as to be adapted to receive and hold the whip. The lower end of the part A is made with the cap a., which has a recess upon its inner side, in which one end of the spiral spring D is located. Above said cap there is an offset with a view ot' making the part A adapt itself to the parts B and C, so that they all can be pivoted together. lilith this object in view the part A is constructed with the circular projection a', having the orice a2, through which the pivot b passes. lVe attach special importance to this construction of the part A. The offset above referred to, the cap a, and the projection a are all novel features that enable us to pivot the parts of which the whip-socket is composed near the bottom and to locate the spiral spring D closeto the pivotal hinge, so that it operates very eiectually, and neither the pivot nor spiral spring interfere in the leastwith the whip. Besides being thus located, it is impossible for them to get out of orderor cease to be effectual in operation.
In the center of the part A there are two clamps a3, by which the whip-socket is secured u to the dash-board of the vehicle. This is accomplished simply by removing the screws a5 and placing the braces or clamps a upon the opposite side of the dashboard and then adjusting the screws through the openings in the braces a6, thence through the dash-board into the orifices in the ends of the ears al.
C represents that part of the whip-socket which serves, in co-operation with the other parts, as a rein-holder, and it is made with the cap c upon its lower end, which corresponds to the can a upon the lower end of the part A. The cap c also has a recess upon the inner side, and in the recesses upon the inner sides of the caps a and c the ends of the spiral spring D are adjusted and securely held in position. The part C also has a projection c', in which there is an orifice c?, the purpose ot which will bc hereinafter' explained.
It will be observed that the sides of thc lower end of the part B are circular, having a cavity in the center of same, into which the proj ecting parts a and c', (respectively, of the parts A and 0,) are adapted, and into which they are placed and securely pivoted by means of the pivot h, which passes through the oritice a2 of the part A, the orices U3 ot the part B, and the oriiice c2 ot the part C, thereby fastening securely the th ree parts together` and making a pivotal hinge upon which said parts work, and which is controlled by the spiral spring D, which causes said parts to readily adjust themselves and securely hold any whip or line that may be placed in the whip-socket.
We attach special importance to the location and arrangement of this pivotal hinge and the spiral spring D, by means of which an automatic whip socket and line-holder are combined in one, and so arranged that each element is absolutely essential to the perfection of our invention.
