(No Model.) D. G. WYBTH.
SL-EIGH.
41\I0..444,405. y Patented Jan. 6, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAYII) G. VYE'III, OF NElVARK, OI'IIO, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUSTUS G. VYETII AND -W'ILIIIAM M. IWICOULLY, OF SAME PLACE.
S L El G H SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO.-444,405, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed December 5, 1889. Serial No. 332,718. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID G.. WYETH, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented new and usefulImprOvements in Sleds, Sleighs, and Sleigh-Runner Attachments for Theeled Vehicles. Of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Io sleds, sleighs, and sleigh-ru nner attachments for wheeled vehicles wherein wood-rave, runner, and knees are used; and the Object of my improvementis to enable the frame-work of the sled, sleigh, Or sleigh-runner attach- [5 ment to be made by putting together the same with the usual wood-rave, runner, and knees, but with unmortised and uutenoned joints of knees and rave and knees and runner, such joints and the frame-work Of such knees, runzo ner, and rave being secured strongly and rigidly together by iron side and T plates. I attain these ends by the Inechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, like lettering referring to like parts.
z5 Figure I is a perspective view of one bob or runner or side of a sled or sleigh, having thereon iron side Or frame plates and T-plates. Fig. 2 shows one of the side plates removed. Fig. 3 shows a T-plate removed.
3o As shown in Fig. l, the frame of the sled or runner is made up of a rave a, runner b, and two knees c c. The knees cc are cutto iit against the rave a and runner Z) at proper angles and no mortise-andtenon joints are 55 used.
Upon either side of the unmortised vand uutenoned joints of knees c c and rave a are Vplaced side plates d d d (l, which are secured together by appropriate rivets, screws, or bolts 40 passing into or through the wood-work. One of these side plates is shown detached in Fig. 2. It may be conveniently made of inalieable iron cast, and has two flanges e e, adapted tO clasp or clinch down upon theknees c c.
The form of any such side plate d is varied, accordingly as it is to be used at front or rear knee and upon lthe inside or outside.
Upon either'side of the unmortised and untenoned joints of knees c c and runner?) are placed T-plates g g g g, whichare secured 5o together by appropriate rivets, screws, or bolts passing into or through the same and the wood-wOrk. One of these T-plates is shown detached in Fig. 3. It may be made of malleable east-iron, rand has two flanges h 7L, adapted to clasp Or clinch down upon the knees c c. The form of such T-plate varies accordingly, as it is to be used at the front or rear joint and on the inside oroutside thereof.
In a bob-sled a right and left bob, consti` 6o tutinga pair, are secured togetherby a proper beanrcrossing secured to the rave of each bob in the usual manner. Four bobs enter into the construction of a complete bob-sled or double bob-sled. Then the bob Or runner is to be used as a sleigh-runner attachment for wheeled vehicles, a box or thimble covering for the vehicle-spindle will be secured to the rave d by Inethods already in use. In anmordinary long sled two or more beams or bolsters 7o are used in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
In sleighs,` sleds, and sleigh-ru nner attachment-s for wheeled vehicles, the combination of two knees c c', with rave a and runner b, with unmortised and uutenoned joints Ot' said knees and runner and rave, the four side plates d, and four T-plates g, each ot' said 8O side plates having two fianges e, and each of said T-plates having two flanges h, all combined and arranged as substantially set forth.
DAVID G. WYETH.
Xl'itnesses:
JACOB R. DAVIS, MILTON R. SCOTT.
