M. J. OLEARY.' STEAM BOILER.
Patented Deo. 30, 1890.
UNITED STATES ATnNT Orrrcn9 MICIIAEL JAMES OLEARY, OF' GREEN BAY, lVlSCONSlN.
STEAM-Bollani. l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,786, dated December 30, 1890.
Application tiled September 9, 1890. Serial No. 364,418. (No model.) l
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL JAMES OLEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boilers; and I do hereby declarethe following to beaf ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in 1n ultitubular return-flue stearn-boilers, and more particularly to that class known as upright or vertical return-line boilers.
The object of my invention is to provide means for furnishing such boilers with a triple return of the lire and heat through the boiler, and to arrange combustion-chambers therein for thoroughly consuming the products of incomplete combustion and more thoroughly utilizing the heat by retarding its escape to the smoke-stack.
It is also my object to construct such a boiler in a form as compact as possible, one that will generate steam economically and rapidly and produce a greater power to a given size of boiler.
It is also my object to construct a boiler in which all the parts subjected to direct fire and heat contact shall be protected by water, so as to insure increased longevity to the parts so exposed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 is horizontal section taken on the line X X of Fig. 1.
Reference being had to the drawings, S denotes the shell of the boiler, and XV L the water-line.
A denotes the furnace or rebox arranged under the boiler and connected with the boilenshell by stay-bolts a and water-leg.
G denotes the grate.
B B B denote the main lines, through which the complete and incomplete products of combustion pass from the furnace or fire-box t the combustiomchamber C.
E E E E are main iiues connecting the combustion-chamber C with the combustionchamber D. A
F aresmallerfiues communicating with the smoke-stack.
The furnace opens at the rear into the main tlues B B B.
The chamber D is braced by stay-bolts s to the fire-box and shell, leaving a water-space between them. Said chamber is semicircular in shape and its upper wall forms the lower tube-sheet for the tubes F.
The combustion-chamber C is connected by braces c and stay-bolts c to the boiler-shell, leaving a Water-space between them. Said chamber is semicircular in shape, the main tubes B B B and E E E E opening into the same, as shown in Fig. Said combustionchambers D and C are constructed with doors conveniently arranged for cleaning purposes.
It will be seen that by my construction the furnace or tire-box has a Water-space over the top and in rear of its back Walls, and the combustion-chambers C and D are also surrounded by water, as likewise the main flues B B B and E E E E and smaller tlues F.
The tire being started in the furnace or lirebox, the products of complete and incomplete combustion pass through the main lines B B B to the combustion-chamber C, where the incomplete products of combustion are consumed, and such of said products as escape are carried through the main flues E E E E to the combustion-chamber D, where they are also consumed, thus giving perfect fuel combustion. It is evident that said combustionchambers C and D also serve to retain and distribute the heat and more eftectually utilize the same by retarding its escape to the smoke-stack.
It Will be noticed that by my construction the last series of iues F leading to the chimneyl consist of tubes of comparatively very small diameter, the object of which is to more effectually retard the escape of the incomplete products of combustion from the chamber D, besides giving a greater vertical heatingsurface in the boiler. Again, by my construction the combustion-chambers occupy a greater longitudinal than vertical heating-surface, thereby more etl'ectually retarding and consuming the products of incomplete combustion, givingl a greater steam-space at the top of the boiler, placing the heating-sur- IOO face lower down in the boiler and causing a better circulation of Water therein. Again, by my construction the eombustion-chambers and main flues are below the Water-line of the boiler and surrounded on all sides by water. Again, by my arrangement the firebox is given a `greater longitudinal heatingsurface.
Having shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. In un upright tubular-boiler, the combination and arrangement of the small tubes F, lower combustion-chamber D, flues E, combustion-chamber C, and fines I3, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an upright triple-returmue boiler, the arrangement herein shown and described of the lire-box A, an upper combustion-chamber C, and a lower combustion-chamber D,
said fire-box and chambers having a maximum of longitudinal heating-surface.
3. An upright triple-return-ilue boiler consisting of main tubes B B B, leading to an upper combustion-chamber C,the main flues E E E E, leading from said chamber to a larger combustion-eliamber D arranged below, all of said chambers and lues or tubes placed below the water-line of the boiler, and a series of flues F, of minimum diameter, leading from said chamber D to the smoke-stack, substalr tially as and for the purposes shown and described.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence oi' two witnesses. y
MICHAEL JAMES OLERY.
