UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. RODIE, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,235, ydated. July v2, 1889.
Application iiled March 30, 1889.
To @ZZ whom it 71u14/ concern.:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. RoDIE, of
Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and Reference is to be had to the accompanyingy drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved steam-boiler, taken on the line l l in Fig. 2, the steam-dome and the back connection or uptake being partly broken away and the grate-bars removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view ot the boiler in horizontal sect-ion on the line 2 2 in Fig. l and partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse Section taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the boiler, drawn to a smaller scale, and with the man-hole covers and furnace-door removed.
l The shell of the boiler is made with two cylindrical or rounded sections A B, which are joined diagonally at a, so as to have the general form of an ordinary pipe-elbow. Above the fire-box section A and the front end portion of the section' B is fixed the steam-dome C, which communicates by an opening b in the section B with the steamspace of the boiler, and has a man-hole c, which will have a suitable cover. Behind and above the rear boiler-section B and the steam-dome C is arranged the sheet-metal casing D, which is, the uptake or back connection through which the products of combustion pass to a flue or stack E, with which the uptake communicates. The uptake has Serial No. 305,368. (No model.)
a suitable door d, giving access to the rear lire-tubes ot' the boiler.
The boiler Iire-box F, in which the fuel-reoeiving grate G is placed, is located at the lower rounded end of the front section A, and is bounded by a crown and tube sheet f and an annular side wall f', the latter being stayed to the outer shell or plate of this front section of the boiler' by suitable bolts f2. Above and partly. in rear of the tire-box is formed within the boiler-shell an upper combustion-chamber H, bounded by a lower or bottom wall h, which, with the tire-box crownsheet f, gives support to the front verticallyranging series of fire-tubes I, which establish communication between the iire-boX F and combu stion-chamber H. The upper wall or crown-sheet h of the combustion-chamber is stayed to the outer laterally-rounded shell of the boiler-section B by suitable stay-bolts J. The rear wall h2 of the chamber H forms, with the rear end sheet b of the boiler-shell section B, the support for the rear horizontal longitudinally-ranging series of tire-tubes K and lues L L, which establish communication between the combustion-chamber and the uptake. Another wall of thecombustion-chamber is formed of a sheet or plate h3, which extends acrossthe boiler-section B, and for the most part inclines downward and rearward from its joint with the plate h to a point preferably a little below the top of the tire-box F, where it is bent rearward to connect with the lower edge of the tube-sheet h2, into which the forward ends of the tubes and flues K L are expanded. A bottom plate m, which is rounded to conform to the general shape ot' the boiler-section B, and is stayed thereto by suitable bolts m', forms below the fire-tubes and tluesK L a water-space M', which communicates with the general water-space M around the iire-boX, and between it and the combustion-chamber around the tire-tubes L, and above and around the rear fire-tubes and the combustion-chambers.
I use stay-bolts N between the fire-box and combustion-chamber plates f h and stay-bolts O between the plates f h3 to stiften them. Stays P are also provided between the top of the boiler-shell section B and its back plate b for the sole purpose of stiffening this plate at ICO its upper part, its lower part being stayed by the fire tubes and fines K L, which also stay the rear plate h2 of the combustioli-chamber. The stays J N O P are indicated mainly by dotted lines in the drawings.
A iiue R is fitted to and between the plates h and h3 of the combustion-ehamber II and traverses this chamber vertically at its transverse center and toward its rear part and a little distance in front of the lire-tubes and lues K L, so as not to obstruct passage of hot products from the chamber to these firetubes and iiues. This flue R gives free passage to a man entering at the steam-dome hole c and passing through the shell-opening b between the upper and lower portions of the steam and water space M of the boiler,
thus giving him access to the interior surfaces of the water-space to clear them of scale and sedimentary deposits, and the flue R serves also as a water-circ ulation tube, through which a constant active upward circulation of water is maintained in the boiler, and the flue also materially increases the tire-surface and assures quick and steady steaming of the boiler with economy of fuel.
The products of combustion from the fuel on the fire-grate G pass from the firebox F through the fire-tubes I into the combustionchamber II, whence they pass around the iiue or tube R into and through the nre-tubes and fines K L to the uptake or back connection I), and thence over the boiler-shell to the stack.
lVhile I specially claim as my invention certain features of construction of the interior of the boiler, as hereinafter set forth, I make special mention of and claim to the main boiler-shell made in two cylindrical or rounded sections joined diagonally in elbow form, which makes the entire shell self-bracing around the sides, thus enabling me to dispense with many stay-bolts used to brace the shells of boilers otherwise formed. The stay-bolts used in the boiler are employed only to brace its rear end plate and the walls of the re-box and combustion-chamber to enable them to resist the outward or bursting pressure in the water and steam space of the boiler, as will readily be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A boiler made in two cylindrical `or rounded sections connected by an elbow-joint to produce a selfbracing shell, and provided on the upper horizontal section with a steamdome, substantially as herein set forth.
A boiler made in two cylindrical or rounded sections connected by an elbow-joint to produce a seltbracing shell, and an uptake or back connection extending' at the rear and top of the shell, substantially as herein set forth.v
A boiler made in two cylindrical or rounded sections connected by an elbow-joint to produce a self-bracing shell, the ire-box being arranged at the bottom of one rounded section and the fire tubes or fines and the combustion-chamber arranged in the two sections above and in rear of the fire-box, substantially as herein set forth.
4. A boiler made in two cylindrical or rounded sections connected by an elbow-joint to produce a seltbracing shell, the fire-box being arranged at the' lower end of one rounded section and the fire tubes or lues and combustion-chamber arranged in the two sections above and in rear ot' the lirebox, and with a steam-dome on the shell, sub stantially as herein set forth.
5. The combination, in a boiler, of two cylindrical or rounded sections A B, connected in elbow form, a firebox F at the bottomv of section A, y a combustion-chamber II above the fire-box, tubes connecting the fire-box and combustion-chamber, and fire-tubes communicating with the combuStien-chamber and with the uptake or back connection of the boiler, substantially as herein set forth.
G. The combination, in a boiler, of a shell, a tire-box therein, a combustion-chamber above the fire-box, tubes connecting the {irebor and combustion-chamber, fire-tubes connecting the combustion-chamber and the uptake or back connection of the boiler, and a water-circu1ation and man-hole tube crossing the combustion-chamber and communicating with the upper and lower parts of the waterspace of the boiler, substantially as herein set forth.
7. The combination, in a boiler, of a shell made in two cylindrical or rounded sections connected in elbow form, a fire-box at the bottom of the front section, a combustion-chamber above the lire-box, tubes connecting the [ire-box and combustion-chamber, fire-tubes connecting the combustion-chamber and the uptake or back connection of the boiler, and a water-circulation and man-hole tube crossing the combustion-chambcr and communicating with the upper and lower parts of the water-space of the boiler, substantially as herein set forth.
