FIG.2
' INVENT-DR La g l 6m WITN EEEEE UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
FREDERICK \V. HOFFMASN, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-CUTTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,676, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed September 18, 1890. Serial No. 365,360- (No model.)
MANN, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Cigar-Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine of novel construction, more particularly designed for cutting off the end of a cigar during the manufacture of the same.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end View of my improved machine with the cutter raised; Fig. 2, a top view thereof with the cutter depressed; Fig. 3, a cross-section on line 00 00, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a side view of slide f; Fig. 5, aplan of springf Fig. 6, a top View of socket a, and Fig. 7 a plan of the blank from which the guard-plate d is formed.
The letter (t represents a long and narrow horizontal bed-plate supported on suitable feet a and provided with a longitudinal groove (b which is adapted for the reception of a cigar.
b is a lever pivoted to lugs or bearings a projecting upwardly from plate a at one end thereof. Tothisleverthereissecured theknife or cutter c by means of a screw 0', that passes through the lever and through a longitudinal slot 0 of the cutter. By first loosening this screw the cutter may be adjusted. If the lever is depressed the cutter 0 just clears the edge of the plate a and enters between'the two springjaws of a bent guard d. The blank from which this guard is formed is shown in Fig. 7. It consists of a square with two concave and two convex sides and of acentral lug cl, projecting inwardly from one of the concave sides. When this plate is bent upon itself, the two concave sides will lie parallel with each other, and between them will be formed a slit through which the cutter enters. The two convex sides will at their bends form the laterally-extending springs (P, which are completely out of the way of the cutter, while the central lug (1' serves for the connection of the guard to the machine by means of a screw (1.
To throw the knife up after it has been depressed, a spiral spring 6 is employed. The upper end of this spring surrounds a stud b on lever Z), while the lower end of the spring enters a socket a on plate a. This socket has a large central perforation a for the discharge of any tobacco-clippings that may fall into the socket. The spring 6, I make of conical form, Fig. 1, evenly tapering from top to bottom. This will permit the spring to readily 3 follow the motion of lever baround its pivot.
In order to adjust the apparatus to different lengths of cigars,I employ a slide f, which is held at any suitable distance from the cutter by means of a thnmb-screwf, passing through a slot a of plate a and screwing into the bottom of the slide. A spring f Fig. 5,
assists to hold the slide properly in place. A'
gage is marked along groove o so that the slide may be readily set.
Some workmen while using the cutter prefer to insert the tip of the cigar into a small hole, while others prefer to simply rest the tip against a solid plate. To embrace both these constructions the slide fis provided with a front plate f having the tapering holef. Back of the plate f there is hinged to the slide a hook-shaped plate f adapted to be folded over plate f Fig. i. This plate has no hole or opening. \Vhen the platef is exposed, the cigar-tip is inserted into hole f but when the plate f is concealed by plate f the tip is simply rested against the latter.
What I claim is 1. The combination of bed-plate a with pi voted lever b, cutter c secured thereto, spring 6, and with bent guard-plate d, having two concave parallel edges and two laterally-extending springs 61 substantially as specified.
2. The combination of bed-plate a, with pivoted lever b, cutter 0, spring 6, and with slidef, having a perforated fixed plate f and a solid hinged plate f substantially as specified.
' F. w. HOFFMANN.
