Be it known that I, OLIvEa DWOODRUEF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in meat-cuttersgand the objects of myimprovement-s are simplicity of construction and general convenience and efficiency in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my machine, the end of the crank being broken off and removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the crank end of the same, the crank being removed. Fig. 3 is a detached horizontal section on line a; of Fig. 2, the central member being shown in plan view. Fig. 1- is a horizontal section of the case on line y y of Fig. 1, the other parts being shown in plan view. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the combined forcer and cutter on the line z z of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a developed plan or diagram showing the prominent surfaces of said forcer and cutter. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the case on line w Aw of Fig. 2, and Fig. S is a developed plan or diagram showing the prominent inner surfaces of said case.
In general the case A is of a conical form, having the driving-crank B and hopper C at the large end. 1 have, however, illustrated a portion of the case immediately under the hopper as cylindrical, and this is the preferred form; but, if desired, the taper shown at the delivery end might continue the Whole length of the case. On the interior of the case at the top and immediately beyond the hopper is a circumferential rib or cutter 9,

Underneath the hopper and over such portions of the interior of the case as are not occupied by the cutters already described the case is provided with inclined feeding-ribs 13, their prominent surfaces being flush with the cutters before described and merging into the same at their junctions, also stopping a little short of the cutter 11 or merging into it, if desired.
The large end of the case is provided with a band or rim 14, the inner surface of which is provided with a smooth cylindrical bore. The case is provided on the outside of this rim with horizontally-proj ecting lugs or studs The case is also provided with a Asuitable standard or support D of any ordinary construction. The cap or end plate E is provided with a central outwardly-projecting hub 17, which is bored to form bearings for the crankshaft 1S, and upon its inside With a circular hub 16, which its the bore of the rim 14, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4. Said cap E is also provided with hooked and inclined lugs 19, that engage the lugs or projections 15 and draw the cap into the case asthe cap is turned to force said lugs into engagement with each other. 1 provide the Lipper edge of said cap with a series of line notches or seri-ations 2O for being engaged by the holding-dog 21 for holding the cap in position when adjusted. This dog is secured to the case upon an eccentric or crank-pin 22, the same having a suitable'handle by which it may be revolved and by turning Whicli the point of the dog 2l may be withdrawn from the seri-ations 2O or forced firmly against the same for lookin g the cap in place.
The combined forcer and cutter F has its periphery or prominent surfaces made to correspond 'to and fit the prominent inner faces of the case. The flange 23 at the end is made to iit the bore of the rim 14e. From this iiange an inclined'forcing-rib or screw 24 extends a little more than one revolution, passing the longitudinal cutter 25 and stopping a little IOO short of thclongitudinal cutter26. The next foreing-rib 27 is a little shorter and extends beyond the longitudinal knife 32 and stops a little short ot' theknife 25. The next forcing-rib 2S is a little shorter than rib 27 and extends beyond thelongitudinal knife and nearly to the longitudinal knife The next forcing-rib 29 extends beyond the knii'e 26 and nearly to the knife On the back side of the several knives there is ashort forcing-rib 30, substa-ntiallyin alignment with and forming an extension of the several ribs which stop immediately in front of said knives. By stopping theforcing-ribs a little short of the longitudinalknives a longitudinal space is formed immediately in front of each of said knives.
The outer end of the combined forcer and cutter has a plain conical surface 8l of a size to iit and fill the case. This construction of the combined forcer and cutter furnishes one forcing-rib, which extends across the whole distance under the hopper, butleaves a large open space at other points, so as to freely receive the meat. As the meat leaves the hopper it is forced into smaller grooves or spaces between the forcing-ribs and delivered to the respective cutters, there being one cutter for each of the forcing-ribs leading to a space in front of the several cutters. The core of the combined forcer and cutter gradually thiekf ens relatively to the periphery, so that the spaces between the forcing-ribs are of less depth as they reach the small end, where they are quite shallow. combined forcer and cutter are so inclined as to cross the feeding-ribs of the case at an obtuse angle, while they cross the circumferential cutters at an acute angle, so that the spiral ribs of the combined forcer and cutter force in connection with the feeding-ribs of the as described, and for the purpose specified.

The meat is easily and quickly fed, and is partially cut on its way to the perfor-ations, so as to more readily enter therein, thereby facilitating the final cutting at said perforations through which the meat is delivered from the machine.

The combination of the case having tapering portion, the combined forcer and cutter fitted thereto, the cran k-shaft projecting from the large en d of said combined forcer and cntter, the cap E, having a bearing for the said crank-shaft, and the h ub 1 6, fitted tothe large end oi' said case, the case and cap being provided with engaging lugs for holding and forcing the part-s together, and the dog 2l for locking said cap in place, substantially as described, and for the purposeV specified.
