SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,476, dated February 17, 1891.

To all whom, it may concern! Be it known that I, CHARLES SEYMOUR, a citizen of Defiance,in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new I and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in tenoning-machines, and more particularly to an improved cutter-head therefor, its object being to so construct the cutter-head that the end of the spoke being operated upon shall be held steady while the knives are cutting.
A further object is to provide an improved cutter-head which shall beadapted to receive spokes of varying sizes.
A further object is to so construct a cutterhead for tenoning-machines that it shall be simple, comparatively cheap to manufacture, and effectual in the performance of its function.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front face view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a: a: of Fig. 2.
A represents the shank of the cutter-head, having an enlarged rear end, in which a socket a is formed and provided internally with screw-threads, whereby the shank may be screwed upon the shaft or spindle of the machine. At the forward end of the shank A is a 1aterally-projecting annular flange B, having dovetailed grooves or sockets Z) at diametrically-opposite points for the reception of two sliding blocks 0, having inclined longitudinal edges adapted to conform to the shape of the grooves or sockets Z).
To the blocks 0 cutting-knives D are so" cured in any suitable manner, said knives being diagonally disposed relatively to the sliding blocks 0. The forward end of the shank is provided with a flange d, so constructed as to produce an opening for the reception of a removable bushing E, said bushing being secured in position by means of a set-screw e, and being adapted to receive the end of a spoke being operated upon. 3y thus providing a bushing and connecting the same to the cutter-head so that it may be removed it will be seen that when it is desired to operate upon a spoke of larger or smaller size than the one being operated upon said bushing maybe easily and quickly removed and another inserted in its place which shall be adapted to the size of the spoke to be operated upon.
The annular flange B is provided at diametrically-opposite points with perforations f, which communicate with the grooves or sockets b, said perforations being adapted to receive bolts F, which latter are provided with screw-threaded ends for the reception of nuts g. The outer ends of the bolts F are provided with heads h, adapted to engage one side or edge of the sliding blocks 0, and thus hold said blocks fixed. By this means the sliding blocks B and the knives D may be readily adjusted at will.
Secured to the outer face of the annular flange d is a concaved circular saw G, having an opening at its center to permit the passage of the spoke to be operated upon. By means of this saw the surplus portion of the spoke may be removed.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. Hence I do not wish to confine myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth; but,
lI-aving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a cutter-head, of sliding blocks in said head, cutting-knives connected with these blocks, and a bushing for the reception of the end of the spoke,substantially as set forth.
2. In a cutter-head, the combination, with a shank having an annular flange at its forward end, of sliding blocks insaid flange, cuttingknives secured to said sliding blocks, and a bushing for the reception of the end of the spoke, substantially as set forth.
