HINGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,495, dated December 30, 1890.

Application filed January 27, 1890. Serial No. 338,301. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-

- Be it known that I, HENRY L. BIDDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in door-hinges, the several features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed. In the ordinary form of hinges the pivotal part projects beyond the door or facings; and the object of my invention is to so hang a door that there will be no projecting parts, and in opening the door the same will be carried well out, and consequently would not engage the door-facings. I attain the objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side view of the hinge whe closed. Fig. II is a transverse section of the same on line m, Fig. I.

Like letters designate like parts in the two views.

A is a section of a jamb, and B a block rep resenting a door, to exhibit the relation of these parts to the hinge.

The part of the hinge O has flanges at the top and bottom, through which wood-screws are entered to fasten the same to the jamb, and to the left end is pivoted the plate D. In the rightend is the pin N. on which the guideplate M is pivoted. The plate D serves only to connect the part0 and the sliding plate E, to both of which the same is pivoted. The sliding plate moves freely within grooves of the guide-plate M, and the only function of this pivotal guide-plate is to support the right end of the sliding plate in its evolutions. On the extreme right of said sliding plate are the arresting-lugs R R, which under ordinary circumstances could be dispensed with, as the door-jamb would arrest the backward move ment of the pivotal plate 0, onto which the door is hung. Beneath the plate L are held the two locking-arms G G and the plate F, all of which move freely between it and the sliding plate. The right ends of said lockingarms are pivoted to said sliding plate, and the left ends are held against an outward movement by the catches J J, held against the same by the wire spring P. The plates F and O are connected by the plate K, and the former is connected by the diagonal plates I I to the lockingarms. The effect of this arrangement of parts is to hold the plate 0, to which the door is fastened, in a fixed relation to the sliding plate until in the outer movement of the sliding plate the catches J J are detached by the lugs of the guide-plate M, and the ends of the locking-arms having passed said lugs, the plates I I, moving as indicated by circular lines, thereby permitting the door to be moved through one-fourth of a circle.

Vhen a door is closed, using this hinge, the same is folded in the jamb, as shown at Fig. 1, and the operation of opening the door is thus: By pulling the door through a quarter of a circle the hinge carries the door a considerable distance outwardly from the jamb, but at a right angle to its face, and a further movement releases the catches and another quarter-circle is effected, or the door is carried parallel to the wall.

In a door-hinge, the combination of the jamb-plate C, connection-plate D, pivotal sliding plate E, pivotal guide M, provided with lugs, pivotal arms G G, held on said sliding plate, catches J J to bind said pivotal arms, spring P, diagonal plates I 1, plate F, pivotal plate K, and the door-plate O, substantially as specified.
