No. 443.489. Patented Dec. 30; 1890.
........... 4. III m mmi Willa 2556;; v Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES \V. ASHBAUGH, OF CROSSENVILL'E, OHIO.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,489, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed April 22, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. ASHBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crossenville, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Combined Latches and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The special object of my invention is to make a combined latch and lock adapted to be used on a gate or door, as hereinafter described in connection with the drawings.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation showing my invention applied to a door; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 3, a de tail View of the bar which contains a bearing for the knob-spindle. I
In the drawings, A represents a door, to which the latch-lock is held by a keeper B, which straddles the tube a on the facing-piece C, and a bolt D, which passes through the end projection act the key-chamber E, which has the key-hole e in the middle thereof.
The latch-bolt F works through the tube 0 into the door-catch, said bolt being made fast to the tube G, which has on the outside a rack I, in which meshes the part pinion J fast on the spindle K. The latter has its bearings in the door A and in the bar L, and is provided with a knob M on each end. By turning one of these knobs on either side of the door the Serial No. 349,043. (No model.)
latch F will force back the spring N and allow the door to be opened.
0 is a'tube integral with the key-chamber E, and on which slides the tube G, that carries the bolt F, so as to guide and steady it, while the kev-chamber E and face-plate O are rigidly connected by the bar L. Thus it will ated on each side of the door.
011 the inside of the key-chamber tube 0 is pivoted a lever P at 19, while its end is provided with a pin 19' at right angles thereto, said pin working in registering holes of the two tubes 0 G to hold the latch locked. The lever is balanced on its fulcrum so that it will remain wherever it has been left by the key Q, whichis entered through the key-hole c.
Having thus described all that is necessary to afull understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the tubes 0 G, of the key-chamber having a key-hole therein, the balanced lever P, projecting at one end into said chamber and provided with a right-angled pin 19', which works in registering holes of said tubes to lock them together, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES XV. ASHBAUGH.
