Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAGE-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,3117, dated SeptemberQO, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHEPHERD, ot' Nashua, in the county of Hillsboroughand State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Gage-Cock for Steam- Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and representing a central longitudinal vertical section of the cock.
This invention consists in a novel construction of a gage-cock, the principal advantage of which is that the pressure of the steam within or upon it is made instrumental in keeping it tight, and the higher the pressure to which 1't` is subject the less is its liability to leakage.
A B is the shell of the cock, consisting of a hollow socket, A, which is inserted and secured into the head of the boiler, and acharnber, B, of globe or othershape, in the lower part of which there is an opening, a, surrounded by an internal conical valve-seat, c, and in the upper part of which, opposite to the said .opening and seat, there is a larger opening, b, through which the necessary tool is inserted for boring out the opening a and facing the valve-sea-t.
C is a conical valve inserted through the opening b into the seat c, and ground to fit steam-tight into the said seat. d is a spiral spring, applied between thevalve G and a button, d', which is held by the said springin contact with a cap, 'D, which is screwed tightly into the opening b. This spring serves to guide the valve and press it into its seat when there is no pressure of steam in the boiler.
E is a hollow teat or nozzle iitted to move up and down freely within the opening' c, and having provided upon it a collar or shoulder, e, above which a packing composed of one or more rings, f f, of vulcan zed india-rubber is fitted snugly to the said teat or nozzle. This packing is partly received within a counterbore, g4 g, formed in the lower part of the opening G is a bent lever working upon a fulcrumpin, h, which attaches it to the lower part of I the exterior of the chamber B, in front ot' the teat or nozzle E. The longer arm of this lever occupies a nearly vertical position in front of the cock, and the shorter arm a nearly horizontal position under the chamber B, and the last-mentioned arm has an opening, t', through it to receive the lower part of the teat or nozzle E.
When there is any pressure of steam in the boiler, the steam or water llin g the shell A B, pressing on the valve C, presses the latter tirml y against its seat, and this pressure, being greater as the pressure in the boiler increases, makes the valve less liable to leak at a high than at a low pressure, which is the reverse of the effect of a high pressure in other gagecocks. The valve face and seat being both of metal makes it more durable than when either is of any other material.
To try the cock, the upper and larger arm ot' the lever G is pulled forward and the lower and shorter arm thus pressed upward against the collar e, and the nozzle E, thus pressed upward against the valve and caused to raise the latter from its seat and permit the efflux of steam or water through the nozzle. The packing fis at the same time compressed by the collar e into the counterbore g g and around the nozzle, and thereby caused to prevent any leakage around the exterior ot' the nozzle, which is fitted quite loosely into the hole a. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The valve C, movable nozzle or teat E, and spring cl, in combination with each other and with the shell A B and lever G, substantially as herein specified.
2. The india-rubber or other soft packing f. applied in combination with the movable nozzle or teat E, chamber B, and valve-seat c, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
SAMUEL SHEPHERD.
