VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Application filed. April 8, 1914. Serial No. 830,499.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BINGHAM S. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rawlins, in the county of Carbon and State of lVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in valves and has relation more particularly to a valve of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a flushing tank or the like; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein'the pressure of the water serves to normally maintain the valve in closed adjustment.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved valve whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view, partlv in elevation and partly in section,'taken through a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating in detail the contacting end of the valve operating member herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a supply pipe of any ordinary or preferred construction having one extremity terminating in the ground connection 2 adapted to project within the bore of the nipple 3 of the valve casing 4. As herein disclosed, the pipe 1, or more particularly the ground connection 2, is maintained in operative connection with the nipple 2 through the medium of the sleeve 5 carried by the pipe 1 and adapted to have threaded connection with the nipple 3 in a Well known manner. I
As herein disclosed, the valve casing 41 is provided with a chamber 6 having communication with the bore of the nipple 3 through a restricted opening 7 and positioned within the bore of the nipple 3 is the ball valve 8 adapted to be normally maintained seated over the opening 7 through the pressure of the water within the supply pipe 1.
The chamber 6 has in communication therewith the depending discharge pipe 9, the discharge end whereof being restricted, as indicated at 10, so as to force a portion of the water entering within the chamber 6, when the valve 8 is open, through the overflow pipe 10 also in communication With the chamber 6 and serving for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident. The ball valve 8 is adapted to be unseated upon the fall of the water within the tank, and, as herein disclosed, I have threaded through the casing 4: lengthwise thereof and at substantially its axial center the elongated member 11 having its inner extremity reduced, as at 12, and adapted to project through the restricted opening 7, the diameter of such reduced portion being materially less than the diameter of the opening 7 so that no interference will be offered to the flow of the fluid through such opening into the chamber 6 when the member 11 has been so adjusted as to unseat the ball valve 8. The opposite extremity of the elongated member 11 projects exteriorly of the valve casing 4 and has suitably secured thereto the rod 14, to an extremity of which is aflixed the float 15 of any conventional form. By this arrange ment, it is thought to be obvious that as the 90 water within the tank drops, the leverage of the rod 14 will impart sufficient rotary movement to the member 11 as to cause the same to move inwardly and thus unseat the ball valve 8 and as the water within the tank rises the member 11 will be moved in an opposite direction whereupon the pressure of the water within the pipe 1 will cause the ball valve 8 to become seated immediately upon the complete retraction of the reduced portion 12 of the member 11 through the restricted opening 7 as is believed to be selfevident. In order that an efficient engagement may be had between the outer extremity of the reduced portion 12 and the ball valve 8, I find it of advantage to have the engaging end of such reduced portion conc'aved, as indicated at 16.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a valve constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is sus--- ceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice;
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a casing provided with a restricted opening in an end thereof and having a discharge in a side adjacent the end provided with the opening, an outwardly dis, posed nipple surrounding said restricted opening, the transverse diameter of the bore of the nipple being in excess of the diameter of the restricted opening, a freely movable valve within the nipple, a supply pipe operatively engaged with the outer extremity of the nipple whereby the pressure within Copies of this patent may be obtained for the supply pipe serves to normally maintain the valve in closed position, an elongated member threaded through the opposite end of the casing, the inner extremity thereof being reduced and adapted to project through the restricted opening to contact with the valve to unseat the same, the. transverse diameter of the reduced portion of the elongated member being less than the diameter of the restricted opening, a rod secured to the outer extremity of the elongated member and disposed perpendicularly thereof and a float secured to the outer extremity of the rod, the thr'eaded engagement between the elongated member and the coacting end of the casing being such, as to cause outward travel of the elongated member upon upward movement of the rod, under the influence ofthe float. i
In testimony whereof I hereuntoaffix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
