Description

AValve-etel11 M, and is held firmly upright by .a set-screw.
`as in many cases, especially with locomotive JOHN D. LYNDE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Laim Patent No. 74,389, ma .February 11, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-INDICATORS FOR BOILERS.
die Stimme referat tu it `tigen latas ttmt ma vmatten;nat tf iterate I Be it known that I, JOHN D. LYNDE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Preventing Low Water in Steam-Boilers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-f- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a longitudinal elevation.
Y A'is a cast-iron oase, connected to t the position, and supplied with a steam-cock, to clos Boat, made of a size that will enter the aperture in is a brass mouth-piece and valve-case. F lis a valve-sten1 and valve. valve F on its seat., I, valve-seat andstopper to E. K is a brass cap,
he boiler by the pipe C, which may be of`a convenient length to'suit e the communication, when desired. Y B is a metallic tubal A, and hung at one end on the pin D by the lever G. E H is a conical spiral' springgwhioh holds which supports the whistle L, the detached d with the boiler at the lowest line to which it is desir- The operation is as follows: The pipe C is connecte Y o add more water for regular working purposes.
able the water should reach, or at which it would be neccssaryt When the water is above the pipe Cin they boiler, the pressure of steam will keep AIilled nearly withl water, and the iioat B will be raised, the dottedl line being the surface of the water. The indicator may now-be used as a gangecock, (and it wo'cildvery properly be put in the place o'f the usual middle gauge) by pressing on the 'detached valve-stem at O. yF is pushed from its seat, and'water runs from thc pipe N. When 4the water in the boiler begins to fall below the top of the aperture in pipe C, the water will drop -.out of A, the float B falls, tipping the valve-stem F by the lever Gr, andthe Avalve willrbe openedsuiiiciently t'o allow steam to escape and sound the whistle. Start the pump or injector, andas soon as the water'rises, the indicator, being automatic, will cease to whistle. l i The object of this invention is to obviate the diiiiculties experienced in' similar articles fromV sediment, Etc., which prevent the desired operation. The valve. being constantly in deposits of lime, sticking of valves,
use as a. gauge, cannot get fast. It is -e pecially intended to prevent low water, by indicating when water is needed, as described above. It is foundto much more correctly indicate the water than the common gauge-cock, -boilers, the gauge, if opened suddenly, will `deceive the engineer f the water is a little low and the fire extremely hot; while in by showing water from the foam, and ebiillition, i
he action in the boiler, and when the real surface this indicator the water is always still, and not aiected by t I l of the water reaches 4the connecting-pipe C, it willat'once be known, as the foam and attenuated water are not suiicient to keep the indicator filled; consequently a'callfor more water would belheard.
` What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--' The arrangement ofthelever G, valve-stem F, spring H, valve M, pipe N, with reference to the oat B, whistle L, and case A, wherebyfto sound an alarm. when the water is too low in the-boiler, and to ascertain the condition of the water at -other times, substantially as set forth.
JOHN D. LYNDE.
